OMG OH MY GOD!: A reality check on the quagmire of rituals

From cradle to grave the average Indian is so much strangulated in the tentacles of rituals and processes that he has forgotten to lead a normal life and for any eventuality he has a fatalistic argument. OMG OH MY GOD! is a time check for such blind faith in rituals and it exhorts the individual not to be caught in the web of deceit in the name of religion, as religion has become more a commercial entity, in the garb of faith.

It took a Paresh Rawal to tell the average Indian that the time has indeed come for him and her to start having a faith in the self rather than the gods to get things moving and gods would also be secretly pleased that an individual human being has decided to take on the challenge through OMG OH MY GOD!. The climax of the film underlines it in a succinct manner, where when Paresh Rawal unravels the acts of the misdeeds of the contractors of religion and when the public shocked by their acts decides to give them a sound thrashing, character of Paresh Rawal comes to their defense and advises the so-called practitioners of religion to leave the court. But what Mithun Chakraborty says also underlines the attitude of average Indian towards religion- he says that religion is like an opium and is a shop that has been running since eons and it is difficult to shut it down as in every age new customers would pop up.

This last scene in the film OH MY GOD indeed underlines the fine line of distinction the trade that is happening in the name of faith and the ideologies associated with faith. The dialogue uttered by Mithun Chakraborty indeed is encapsulation of the fact associated with average human being in our country. Akshay Kumar also would be happy as he can hope to cash on the success of ROWDY RATHORE, and leave behind the failure of the JOKER, as in the form of Lord Krishna he has given a powerhouse of a performance.

In a subtle and humorous manner OMG OH MY GOD! has pointed out how the vital resources that average individual earns by slogging his ass is donated for the cause of religion and it indeed is an avoidable wastage that could have better uses for the cause of nation building.

In a country like India to be able to make a film which questions the blind faith associated with religion, as OMG OH MY GOD! has done is indeed a bold step forward. But the moot point is even the world of Hindi cinema or for that matter other regional cinemas as well continue to be under the stranglehold of religion. Would OH MY GOD bring about rationality in the whole process? Time would only tell, till then one should enjoy OH MY GOD.
