If I ask, have you heard of the legendary athlete Makhan Singh? You may probably giggle and correct me that the legendary athlete I am mentioning is actually Milkha Singh, who is India's only athlete to win a Gold Medal at Commonwealth Games in1958 and an Olympian with many records to his name. You may perhaps give an entire life history of Milkha Singh. That's because you have seen Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's biopic BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG lately.

However, readers would be stunned to know that Makhan Singh is no fictitious name but, in fact, an Arjuna Awardee (India's highest award for sporting excellence) who has the distinction of defeating even Milkha Singh in the 400m race in the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games. Milkha Singh too reveres him as a dynamic athlete and in an interview he has candidly confessed that the only athlete he feared was Makhan Singh!!!

However thanks to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's highly successful biopic BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG, depicting the life and achievements of Milkha Singh, the nation and the globe recognizes Milkha Singh. That is the power of cinema!

On the other hand his contemporary Makhan Singh blessed with similar talent, died an unsung death. His family is struggling to survive and knocking government doors for financial assistance.

Bollywood has portrayed some interesting biopics in the past that are worth mentioning like the untold tale of Indian hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi, in Yash Chopra's Shah Rukh Khan starrer CHAK DE INDIA. Then UTV's Irrfan Khan starrer PAAN SINGH TOMAR, that portrayed the untold tale of Indian solider who was a good athlete and won India a gold medal at Indian National Games but turned dacoit after his commendable feat was not applauded and he had to face poverty.

Thus it would be great if our recent filmmakers make biopics on legendary Indian personalities who are forgotten by the nation but deserve kudos for their tremendous contribution to the nation like our ex-prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who rose from a poor family and gave our arch rival Pakistan, a crashing reply in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965.

It would be great if readers could suggest names of legends on whose life biopics should be made and mail at editor@glamsham.com
