India is the new destination for film festivals

One of the positive benefits that accrued on account of the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers in India is that the business of exhibition of cinema started moving out to quaint places in the country. These new breed of filmmakers has really deconstructed the business of film exhibition by taking it to their respective cities, from where they emerged to make the film viewing a rich and invigorating experience.

The paradigm shift in the business of film festivals, it's moving out of the metropolitan cities is an Outlier moment in the history of cinema as it brings out the fans and aficionados to participate in the process of film making, exhibitions and to share their insights about the films being exhibited. After all, Cannes which is considered a Mecca of film festivals, otherwise is a small town where the filmmakers from all across the world converge to show their films, talk about the films being exhibited, seek inspiration to be there at one point of time or the other in their cinematic career.

In India the centers that have emerged as new destinations for film festivals include, Leh- which has now emerged as the highest place in the world for film festivals, Patna, Gorakhpur, Dharamshala. Obviously the film festivals when they are held along with the peak tourist seasons provide best platform to publicize the destination as a centre of tourist interest as also give the film festival the much needed publicity. The film festival at Ladakh that was held in June last year, coinciding with the peak tourist season, has given Ladakh an international publicity as being the centre where apart from freaking out in the landscape, also provides a window of opportunity for the tourists to catch up with the films that they might not have been able to see or even hear in their abodes, probably owing to the fact these films may have been crowded out in multiplexes all over the country by films having commercial component.

Film festivals that are held in quaint locations, like Ladakh, Gorakhpur etc., also provide an opportunity for the fans to view quality international cinema. If one were to view the off-beat films that were released last year in particular, one thing that would emerge as the underlining motif is that these films have been conferred with one award or the other at the new centres of film festivals around the globe. Well, the time has indeed come for the Indian cities to stake their claim and make their name on the film posters of the films with difference to publicize their names as the countries where serious cinema and meaningful cinema indeed is viewed with interest.
