SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... and the travails of economy

It may be fortuitous or it may have planned to be released within a week's time of the union budget of the country, but SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... indeed is a stark portrayal of the struggle that the common man is facing trying to eke out of his survival on a day-to-day basis. While the budget making is an annual exercise that the government undertakes whereby it presents its income and expenditure statement, for the common man preparation of a budget on a day-to-day basis has become a painful exercise.

Produced by Ashok Pandey and directed by Anshul Sharma it has veteran Sanjay Mishra as the lead actor in SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... and Sanjay Mishra to emphasize that the price of the commodities is going through the roof staged a dharna at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to drive home the point of the prices going over the roof. The yawning gap that has been created between the haves and the have-nots has been succinctly underlined in the film through the dialogue where a political worker is informing the audience in a village of lakh-crores being stashed of the Indian businessmen and the politicians, while the audience demands to know whether it is in lakh or crore. When it is informed to the audience that indeed, it is lakh-crore they gape in amazed at the figures for an account head, while they are not able to even garner a few thousands to eke out living.

SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... is also in a way pointer to the fact that how one still can manipulate the system to become a beneficiary of a particular subsidy scheme which otherwise one may not have been eligible to achieve. Set in Northern part of the country, where still majority of the poor of the country continues to reside, SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... follows the line adopted by the celebrity Hindi writer Shri Lal Shukla whose magnum opus RAAG DARBARI is a stark commentary on the status of poverty and the social matrix of North India.

SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... also follows the genre of films where content is the king, and it tries to carve niche based on the uniqueness of the content. There is nobody in the country or outside who has been affected by the runaway inflation, so in form or the other SAARE JAHAAN SE MEHNGA... would strike a chord.
