This isn't something that one could see coming but it has indeed happened. Promo of 3D version of SHOLAY, which is all set to release on 3rd January, is out and surprisingly Ramesh Sippy, director of the film, is being relegated to a deep corner. In the credit rolls of the film, Ramesh Sippy is hardly visible as most of the space is taken by the new producers and the co-producers of this version.

"While credits for each of the actors - Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri - are intact, the man conspicuous by his absence is Ramesh Sippy. It appears as if it was just incidental to have a director on board. This is sacrilege no less to have the man, whose vision made SHOLAY possible, not even getting due credit for the film," says a prominent filmmaker with anger in his voice.

No wonder, many have made their protest being heard on the social networking site.
Commented Madhur Bhandarkar, "Just saw trailer of the cult classic SHOLAY 3D. Stunned to notice that there is no separate slate of credit for the man whose vision it was."

A sentiment that was shared by Goldie Behl as well. He said, "It's quite sad that Mr. Ramesh Sippy, Salim-Javed, R.D. Burman haven't been given equal prominence in the credits of SHOLAY 3D."

Prominent TV host Mini Mathur didn't seem to be bothered though and felt that credits or no credits, the legacy of SHOLAY stayed. She said, "Don't need any credit plates to know who created this master class for Indian cinema."

However Nikhil Advani wasn't as forgiving as he commented, "The travesty of the century has happened to the film of the century. G.P. Sippy, Ramesh Sippy have been relegated to 'also mentioned'."

There are few who feel though that this is over-reaction from part of some, considering the fact that Ramesh Sippy had chosen to disassociate himself from the 3D re-release many moons back.

Says a producer on condition of anonymity, "He was the one who had moved court over the rights of SHOLAY and in the process even jeopardized the fate of its 3D adaptation. If he wasn't happy about the decision in any case and had refused to be associated with this version, I don't think he would be fretting over being kept out of the credit rolls."

Now that seems like a fair argument.
