Aye Phoolon Ki Rani, Bahaaron Ki Mallika,

Tera Muskurana Gazab Hogaya....

Truly when Sadhana, the bewitchingly beautiful actress of yesteryear smiled, it left many floored but more than her smile it was her typical 'Sadhana Haircut' that became a fad amongst the girls of 60s.

SADHAN
SADHANA

Today, on September 2, Sadhana turns 72. Glamsham.Com wishes her Happy Birthday and enlightens the readers how she developed her famous hair style and how her same hair style posed a trouble with an eminent filmmaker.

Sadhana, who ruled the roost in Bollywood in the 60s giving super hits like EK MUSAFIR EK HASINA, MERE MEHBOOB, ARZOO, WOH KAUN THI?, MERA SAAYA, ANITA etc. made her debut with LOVE IN SIMLA opposite debutant Joy Mukerjee. The movie was directed by R. K. Nayyar, who later married her. In the movie, Sadhana was depicted as an ugly girl sporting spectacles, who is ignored by the hero. However, her grandmother gives her fashionable looks and transforms her into a charming lady who goes on to win a beauty pageant and the hero's heart.

Sadhana in an interview said, ''I had a broad forehead hence despite make -up Nayyar Sahab, the movie's director, was not satisfied by my looks. Therefore he decided to give me a different hair style which would hide my forehead. Nayyar sahab had seen the Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn, who used to have a fringe. He brought a picture of Audrey Hepburn and showed it to our hair stylist. The idea clicked as the fringe worked wonders and became famous as Sadhana cut.''

However readers would be surprised to know that though the Sadhana cut became a rage, the same hair cut landed Sadhana in trouble when she signed Bimal Roy's film PARAKH. On the first day of the shooting when Sadhana arrived on the sets with her famous hairdo, Bimla Roy was raged because he wanted her to look very simple and down-to-earth as in the movie her role was that of a simple village belle. Hence, he told Sadhana to give up her hair style, if she wished to do the movie. Sadhana was in dilemma as working with a legend like Bimal Roy was an opportunity not to be missed. After thinking for a while, she struck an excellent idea. She went into her dressing room and hid her fringe with a clip and returned in a plain sari with sober looks minus the Sadhana cut!!!
