Riteish Deshmukh is far away in London shooting for Sajid Khan' HUMSHAKALS. However despite stating that he is 'speechless', there is a lot that can be inferred from his happiness, what with GRAND MASTI turning out to be his grandest success ever. With the film also marking his double hat trick of successes (HOUSEFULL, DOUBLE DHAMAAL, TERE NAAL LOVE HO GAYA, HOUSEFULL 2, KYA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM), he is finding himself in an elite zone. Here's a quick one-on-one with the actor:
Yet another multi starrer, yet another huge success?
One thing that Vivek (Oberoi), Aftab (Shivdasani) and I were sure about was that though in an individual act some of the comic scenes may not work, they would be a riot of we were together in it. The collective comic timing showed. Our conscious effort was to make the film funny for all segments of audience even with its out and out adult humour.
You seem to have mastered the genre of adult comedies.
It is just a coincidence that GRAND MASTI has come immediately after KYA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM which was in the same genre. Having said that, let me tell you that for all our straight faced acts, it was very difficult to get into the mood that the film required. The scenes were outrageous; they were not normal and were far more scandalous than KYA KOOL... series, which in comparison, were much simpler.
With the way the film is holding itself so very well on weekdays as well (the film has collected around 60 crore already in 6 days), is there a possibility of GRAND MASTI entering the 100 crore club?
HOUSEFULL 2 too was a 100 crore success and I will tell you something, even for that I didn't make any statements till it actually happened. Now if GRAND MASTI reaches that mark, as some people out there seem to be stating now, it would be something. When the film released on Friday, the real thing was for it to recover its investment and be called as a clean success. We have already managed that. Let the film continue its winning streak; I am not yet thinking of 100 crores though.
CHECK OUT: Manjari Phadnis - Didn't expect GRAND MASTI to be such a huge hit!
You sound diplomatic.
It is not about being diplomatic. Of course if any film of mine reaches a particular number then obviously I am excited. Having said that, since the film is not very expensive, whatever collections we have gained so far are fantabulous by themselves. One also needs to consider the fact that no one below 18 is anyways watching the film in theatres and families with children haven't stepped in too. Still, we have made it big.
Meanwhile what happens next for you?
I am actually working on a couple of scripts and am looking forward to doing some interesting solo films as well in the romcom space. I am also excited about my production, a Marathi film LAL BHAAR which is an action drama. It would be out this January.
