This week, I will address two actors, both of who have left an indelible mark with their respective performances, one in the desert heat and the other in the heat of the moment!

Ladies first...

Dear Kirti Kulhari

Yours is a face that will launch a thousand products. There is mystery as well as beauty, a heady cocktail. There is also talent aplenty as an actor.

JAL was a revelation of another facet of your persona-your ability to send temperatures soaring, even higher than that of the desert heat. You displayed that 'X' factor without even appearing vulgar and that is the difference between you and a recent import that has been thrust upon us. Even when scantily clad, she appears stone cold.

As Kesar in JAL, you injected soul into your character; your helplessness towards the end as the villain took over was emoted through your eyes. Again, it was your eyes in the first scene that tore through the screen as you went, sword in hand, to attack your enemies.

From Gulabo in SOOPER SE OOPER to Kesar, there has been a steady rise in your acting graph. As a villager who came into the city, with her principles intact, Gulabo was confidence personified. The shift in culture shock was well absorbed by your character.

In RISE OF THE ZOMBIE, although your role had a limited scope, your dialogue delivery and body language were an extension of your confidence. You are completely 'in the scene' whenever you are on the screen.

Dear Arunoday Singh

Lunatic, fanatic, megalomaniac, you got all these traits to shout out from your character as Angad Bedi the 'crack' cop. Top it with the sudden swift to that of a puppy in love. Terrific.

You were the 'Hero' in MAIN TERA HERO. Although Varun Dhawan did a fabulous job, it was your consistent brilliance all through the film, which gave the film the added dimension it was looking for. Take your character away and the film was bound to fall flat.

You gave menace a different meaning. This spark was seen in your debut film, SIKANDER (2009), where you injected life in your portrayal as Zahgeer Quadir, a militant leader.

But herein lies the sad part for both you and Kirti; it is difficult for talent like yours to thrive. I guess it takes more than talent to be recognized in Bollywood, Bollywood, Bollywood!

Look at where Shahana Goswani (Debbie from ROCK ON, 2008) is today; Or for that matter Muzammil Ibrahim (DHOKA 2007), Shri Swara Dubey (D-DAY) or Ashok Samarth (EK CHAALIS KI LAST LOCAL, 2007).

I'm sure there are enough rounds they have been making to the right places.

But don't lose hope; break down the doors with whatever performances that comes your way.

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza
