'Tum chale jaaoge to sochenge,
humne kya khoya humne kya paaya

How true is this Jagjit Singh's ghazal because today when he is no more, music lovers around the globe feel the anguish of his demise more poignantly than ever.

On his birth anniversary that falls on February 8, Glamsham.Com remembers the 'Monarch of Ghazals' and reveals how Jagjit Singh displayed his wizardry in singing at a young age and had the fortune of composing a welcome song for India's First President Rajendra Prasad, while he was just in college!

'Poot ke paon paalne mein hi nazar aa jaate hain,' goes a famous Hindi proverb meaning that a kids talent is evident in his early days. This holds true for the legendary ghazal maestro and owner of a mellifluous voice, Jagjit Singh, because when he was a kid he had a strange fondness for music and displayed his talent at a young age.

His father Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman observed his art and despite resistance from family ancestors he gave him the best of musical training, first under the gifted music Ustad Pandit Chhaganlal Sharma, a blind music teacher and later, under Ustad Jamal Khan.

The result was instantaneous as Jagjit Singh began singing 'shabads', the devotional Sikh hymns in Gurdwaras at a tender age. While he was in IX standard he gave his first public appearance which was quite a hit!

In an interview Jagjit Singh recalled his college days when he sung in front of a gathering of more than 4000 people. Jagjit recalled, ''The most memorable memory of my collage days is when I was singing in front of a huge crowd. Unfortunately, the power went off and there was darkness in the hall, however the audience was so spellbound by my singing that there was no commotion! As the sound system was operated by battery I kept singing and the audience regaled without bothering about the power failure!''

Another important incident about Jagjit Singh's college days include the visit of India's First President Rajendra Prasad to Jalandhar. In those days, Jagjit Singh was studying at Jalandhar's DAV College.

In addition, he was also doing part- time singing for Jalandhar's All India Radio (AIR) station, which encouraged young budding singers who were specialized in singing devotional songs. Jagjit Singh was graded 'B' class artist and even paid small remuneration.

In 1962, when Rajendra Prasad visited Jalandhar, Jagjit Singh was asked to compose a welcome song that he did with distinction. However despite such talent Jagjit Singh had struggle tooth and nail in Mumbai to gain stardom.

On his birth anniversary, we once again, salute the greatness of this genius who will live in our hearts forever...
