Remember classics like DO BIGHA ZAMIN, PARINEETA, DEVDAS, MADHUMATI, SUJATA, BANDINI etc. each better than other. Glamsham.Com remembers the great filmmakers and recalls his association with another great, thespian Dilip Kumar.

Bimal Roy’s excellence as a filmmaker was depicted in his very first Hindi film DO BIGHA ZAMIN that he made in the early 50s. The hard hitting social content coupled with brilliant music made the movie both artistic and commercial. The movie not only won National Award and the popular Filmfare awards but went on to win several awards abroad including the prestigious 7th Cannes Film Festival and Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Applauding the genius filmmaker Dilip Kumar, who had the pleasure of working with Bimal Roy in three movies viz. DEVDAS, YAHUDI and MADHUMATI, in a documentary titled ‘Bimal Roy:  Silent Thunder’ shown on England’s Channel & candidly confessed, “During my times there were no educational institutes that taught acting hence in my formative years my guru in acting has been Bimal Roy.” He added, “For me Bimal Roy was like an institute who taught me the nuances of acting and the art of getting into the skin of the character.”

Recalling his first experience while working with the legend in DEVDAS, Dilip Kumar said, “When Bimal Roy first met me at my residence with our mutual friend Hiten Chaudhary (film producer who made ARZOO with Dilip Kumar), he proposed the subject of DEVDAS based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel by the same name. But since I had not read the novel, Bimal da arranged a translation of the novel and asked me to read the novel.”

He continues, “After reading the novel I was charged by the intensity of the character and more so it was being made by Bimal da, for whom I had high regards as a filmmaker. What was most stirring was that Bimal da knew that I was a stickler hence he made me sit with the writer Rajendra Singh Bedi and involved me during the entire process of film making.”

Readers would be surprised to know that though Dilip Kumar was the super star, highest paid actor and very cautious about choosing his movies but when it came to working with Bimal Roy he had no reservations.

Bimal Roy fans have a great opportunity to know the legenday filmmaker more closely by visiting an exhibition on the filmmaker being held at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, also known as ‘Prince of Wales Museum’ in Mumbai from July 7 to July 20, 2014.
