If FASHION was a brutal expose on the underbelly of Indian fashion industry then HEROINE is presumed to be a distressful journey from rags-to-riches of a glam-world diva. Madhur Bhandarkar, an iconic name associated with hard-hitting social drama makes his second major outrageous move in glam-world with this venture. Aggressively promoted and eagerly awaited, this flick is presumed to be next big women-centric flick in the marquee, after the super-successful THE DIRTY PICTURE, a flick that was a biopic on B-grade South-Indian actress.

Salim-Suleiman, a prolific musical duo, tasted their first major commercial success with FASHION, a highly successful musical album that delivered couple of chartbusting hits ("Fashion Ka jalwa", "Mar Jaavan", "Kuch Khaas Hain") and HEROINE can be presumed to be another big commercial endeavor for them. Bhandarkar's last offering DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI (Music-Pritam) was a reasonably good musical success and so was Salim-Suleiman's last album JODI BREAKERS, so decent expectations are there from this album. Can they together make it big this time and make their HEROINE win every musical award? Let's find out...

When "Yeh Honsla" (DOR), a mellifluously motivational Sufi track by Shafaqat Amanat Ali Khan hit the marquee, it created a special paradigm from Salim-Suleiman in this cadre, a delightful melancholic song that won several hearts. "Saiyaan", a similar sounding composition brings myriad shades of heartbreaking emotions that subjugates to the miseries and haplessness of the dejected protagonist. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's excruciating and varying vocals epitomizes it all and does it with the desired finesse that stays on in the senses. Soothing in light-hearted arrangements and having a pertinent Rajasthani tribal folksy feel in its signature tuneful feel, it has Amitabh Bhattacharya's well narrated poetic expressions that connects with every emoted sentiments. Despite being repetitive to one of their favorite works (("Yeh Honsla" (DOR)), Salim-Suleiman deliver another winner in "Saiyaan", a lovable listening fare for every Rahat fan. Impressive!!!

Gossip, Scandal, Glamour, Poster and....Heroine! "Main Heroine Hoon", a blazing westernized "Broadway musical" groovy feelstrack brings the limelight on the much talked "Heroine", a thematically oriented title track with a strong upbeat urbane musical feel. This time Salim-Suleiman start off with a typical 70's Bollywood-ish action flick theme feel (title track of JOHNNY GADDAR), serenading out an intimidating theatrical appeal to the dark shades of the character. Aditi Singh Sharma's slender classical westernized jazz vocals impress to the core and are the most suited for the situation. Just like "Fashion ka Jalwa" (FASHION), it has melodramatically strong musical affixation to the subject that comes in a story-telling fable, where whims and fancies of being a "Heroine" are narrated in modest wordings; a reasonably good situational song.

Hope Floats...! In glamour world, there is a dazzle of glitz, buzz, gossip, and there are big aspirations of making it big at any cost. "Khwahishein" (meaning "aspirations") brings out these secretive sentiments of the aspiring "Heroine" in most communicative and melodious way, adding out a strong narrative edge to the flow of this sensitively packed drama. In "Khwahishein", Salim-Suleiman try to create a similar narrative feel of "Mar Jaavan" (FASHION) with a more classically refined westernized feel. Shreya Ghoshal's touching vocals creates a sensitive verve to the sentiments, a vocal performance that can be correlated to her impressive vocal rendition in "Kyon" (KAMBAKKHT ISHQ). Salim-Suleiman use strong elements of "R&B" and "Soul" music in giving it an emotionally stylish melodic feel, but still the composition lacks the desired punch of being one of finest in this genre. Irfan Siddique is the pick of the lot in the lyricist section this time with the most expressively conveyed wordings; once again a decent effort by Salim-Suleiman that is going to light up insightful moments of the film.

Finally it's the party-time as now Salim-Suleiman bring out discotheque fervor on floors in highly infectious sounding "Tujhpe Fida". If you have enjoyed tracks like "Kunwara" (JODI BREAKERS), "Aadat Se Majboor" (LADIES VS RICKY BEHL), then this track will surely amuses you as it brings out a typical musical madness of the composer-duo. Benny Dayal's enormously racy voice hits the deck like a fire and collages belligerently with electronica filled disco-beat fillers. Shraddha Pandit svelte tones adds loads of feminine sensuality in this hi-voltage dancing feast and makes this as another entertaining fare. Like a couple of previous tracks, this composition does not create any major stir, but delivers sufficient package of entertainment that makes this a lively affair.

HEROINE delivers no major "hero-ics" but offers a decent musical entertainment for the listeners. Salim-Suleiman fail to repeat the magic of FASHION , but still deliver some engaging and entertaining situational tracks. "Halkat Jawaani", the most appealing massy tracks ensures its place in charts while "Saiyaan" and "Khwahishien" are good quality works that are going to be favorites among niche listeners. As per its super-hype and promotions, the album underperforms to an extent, but still it will be the content that will be biggest USP to entertain; a promising run at the box-office will surely be a big boost to the album's prospects.
