The cushiest way to knit a beautiful story without cracking your own brains is to get exceptionally inspired by someone else's anecdote that is already a rage. Our film industry seems to be following this trend more than often. Gurinder Chadha's Balle Balle Amritsar to L.A. aka Bride & Prejudice (in English) is the most recent to join the league. The movie is a straight lift from Jane Austen's bestseller Pride & Prejudice.
Unlike Chadha's previous movies, Bride & Prejudice swanks of a commercially doable mainstream actress who is presently reigning high on her career graph. She is none other than Ex-Miss World Aishwarya Rai. She is sure going places with some of the best movies in her kitty National as well as International. Bride & Prejudice also stars Namrata Shirodkar, Anupam Kher along with Hollywood actors Martin Henderson and Daniel Gullies. Anu Malik has a new passion after all - Acting. Believe it or not, Anu has portrayed a brief character in the movie while Gurinder makes most out of this talented man, as he also composes the music for the movie. Javed Akhtar extends his lyrical support and Bride & Prejudice is in for some good music.
The very first track makes it clear that it is a fun album to listen. "Balle Balle" is a celebratory number having an enchanting melody & beat that will prove to be quite a mover especially during occasions. However, erratic mood swings of the track from fast to slow and back somehow fail to maintain the dance tempo. Sonu Nigam excels in expressing glee as well as melancholy through his emotive vocals while Gayatri Iyer is no less. Chaman Lal Chaman's pertinent lyrics and supportive chorus deserve a mention.
"Tumse Kahen Ya" is a distinctive mellow number and to top it, the track is sung by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik. The track is high on the lyrical value, but unfortunately cannot say the same for the melody of the track. The track has a poignant feel to it and does stir an emotional chord, but is not very impressive. Alka does a solo act on the same track while an instrumental of the track concludes the album toward the end, both of which deserve similar feedback as the original.
"No Life Without Wife" is an absolute fun number, which is about a few ladies putting into words their preferences for their better halves. Since it is a Rap song, the melody is endurable, but the lyrics are a fun to listen. Gayatri Iyer, Soumya Rao & Nisha Mascarenhas demonstrate good team spirit in singing this one and all three sound fairly distinctive and pleasant.
"Payal Bajake (Goa Groove)" is a peppy youthful track, which is pleasant on ears. Hinglish lyrics by Paul Mayeda Berges & Dev Kohli, the accentuated singing by Gayatri Iyer and the spry beats of the track add a feather to Anu's cap.
"Lo Shaadi Aayi" has a dozen of hot singers of today, but what it lacks is a fine melody. Kunal Ganjawala, Anu Malik (wondering where he had been all this while!), Alka Yagnik, Sunidhi Chauhan & Gayatri Iyer make the festive song rich on sounds and the Akhtar's sensible lyrics only add value.
Gurinder Chadha is definitely celebrating festivities with music. After a couple of celebratory numbers, Dola Dola is yet another, but this one is dedicated to the Nine Nights Carnival - Navratri, which is just round the corner. The track is a solo act by Gayatri Iyer who executes a commendable job. If publicized well, the folk number might just get lucky this Navratri. However, apart from a continuous Dandia beat, the track barely makes an impact.
Gurinder Chadha has always made movies that are different in the real sense of term and not just the cliché Hat Ke types. The taut contrives, the treatment & the conviction that she has in her target audience is phenomenal As a matter of fact, her movies do not need a strong musical backing and therefore Anu Malik's tepid harmonious aid can safely be excused.
