By Raunaq Kotecha

From a successful director's daughter to a young vivacious actress to a resolute producer and finally to a thoughtful mature director herself, Pooja Bhatt has completed the circle. As a producer Pooja has been quite successful in delivering absolutely diverse genre of movies and has already proved herself more than once in this male dominated industry. Now she is all set to prove herself once again, but this time as a director with her most promising and daringly different movie "Paap".

"Paap" is also a debut vehicle for model Udita Goswami, who looks absolutely gorgeous and fresh in the promos and it is believed that Pooja has succeeded to a great extent in extracting superior quality performance from Udita. John Abraham plays Udita's love interest in "Paap" whose vulnerable looks and strapping semblance sprinkles the right amount of youth in the movie. Although, the music department has been outsourced to a company called Music Mushrooms, two tracks have been composed by extremely talented Anu Malik and rest of the tracks are by Pakistani composers thus bringing in a miscellany of music hitherto unheard of. The soundtrack of "Paap" has an interesting mix of songs and instrumentals.

The album opens up with a masterpiece - Intezar. Composed by Anu Malik and sung solely by Anuradha Paudwal, Intezar speaks volumes of the underestimated talents of the singer. The track begins growing right from the start and you will find yourself entirely surrendered towards the end. Such a divine tune complimented by perfect usage of precise musical tools is truly a treat for ears and mind. Seamlessly etched evocative lyrics by Sayeed Quadri augments value and with highly captivating picturization, the track just turns out to be a visual treat as well. Coming back to Anuradha Paudwal, Intezar should put a permanent end to her Intezar for public recognition and acknowledgment. Anu Malik also deserves a special mention for composing such a charismatic tune and being such a versatile musician.

"Sun aye mere dil" is once again Anu's baby. This duet by Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal has a soft supple tune with minimum musical instruments in performance. The track depicts pain and agony of two lovers. Compared to Intezar this track is rather average, but contextually it may be quite exceptional.

The album undergoes a complete transformation with the entry of Pakistani composers. "Lagan lagi" is a magnificent piece of music with a highly enthralling melody and unpretentious yet divine musical arrangements. The apt use of Tabla and Harmonium spells magic and romance in the air. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's mesmerizing voice captivates and imbues the atmosphere with sheer joy. Amjad Islam Amjad's simple yet complex lyrics are the soul of this magical rendition. The track is more on lines of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's compositions and quite positively such tracks do have the potential to the fill in the void left by his bereavement.

A passionate young singer cum composer Ali Azmat enriches the album with "Garaj Baras". This track is a youthful and highly energetic rendition by Ali Azmat himself with electrifying Guitar pieces. With a splendid humable tune and funky lyrics by Sabir Zafar and Ali Azmat, this track has all it needs to be the next rage for young boogie maniacs, but somewhere in middle the track loses its pace for a brief instance, but jumps up again promptly.

"Laal" has a rather unusual start, as it begins leisurely and gears into tempo as it advances. Rahat and Farukh Fateh Ali Khan lend their voices to this alaap in association with composer Shahi. The track emphatically keeps up to pace of the album that has already built up by now. A catchy tune, outstanding musical setting and unusual voices of the singers carry the song to elevated supremacy.

All the following compositions are celestial instrumentals that compliment the feel and reflect diverse moods of the movie. They must have most likely been exploited very efficiently in the milieu.

"Hamesha ke liye kuch nahin rehta" is a first that is just a minute and 2 seconds long, but is rather evocative and intense with an anonymous male voice doing the requisite stirring. "Apni chahato pe kaabo" is also on the similar lines, but the beats are a welcome addition and the music is much more compelling and engrossing. "Tumhari jagah oonche assman mein", "apna sa kuch" and zindapal are also relatively alike and touch human emotions at various levels.

Among the instrumentals "Witness" and "Tasvir Khichi To" are peculiar. "Witness " has a haunting thriller effect to it whereas "Tasvir" has its own identity of exceptional drum play for 56 seconds flat.

Taken as a whole, musically Pooja has already succeeded in sustaining the exceptions by competently extracting a variety of high-quality music. Music of Paap is an attempt to break the barriers of conventional patterns of Bollywood music and a major risk in itself, but going by the manifestation of the movie, nothing else would have done. Since the album is being promoted appropriately, music should reach the unprecedented heights, if the movie releases without any delays thus preserving the youth and freshness of its music absolutely intact.
