This Friday…, sorry this time Thursday(31st December), has seen triple releases in the form of Pritish Nandy's RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI, Padmini Kohlapure's comeback venture, BOLO RAAM and last but not the least, Celina Jaitley's ACCIDENT ON HILL ROAD. What is unique about the three year end releases is that all of them are small budget ventures with some novel themes and treatment. Unfortunately, none of the three will be able to withstand up to the 3 IDIOTS tornado, which despite being a week old, is still going great guns. May be, released at some other time the three-RAAT GAYI BAAT GAYI, BOLO RAAM and ACCIDENT ON HILL ROAD- would definitely have found patronage in the multiplexes.

Now about Rajkumar Hirani's 3 IDIOTS. While it was given that the Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani and Kareena Kapoor starrer, 3 IDIOTS, would embark on a great start, but it was generally believed in the trade and media circles that it would not be able to emulate the success of Aamir Khan's last Christmas release, GHAJINI. Well, in a way it turned out to be true! 3 IDIOTS did not emulate GHAJINI; it in fact, surpassed it by substantial margin, not only in India but also globally. Released on Thursday at 75 cinemas and at 42 more cinemas of Bombay-Thane on Friday (Christmas day), the film saw an earth-shattering start. Outside of Bombay, the opening was historic everywhere, surpassing all expectations. The first 4-day weekend has seen 3 IDIOTS netting an unbelievable 40 crores from India. Trade expects the film to set new milestones in Indian box-office. In the Overseas too 3 IDIOTS has excellent grosses of ?427,722 from UK and $2,149,227 from US, both for the extended 5-day Christmas weekend (23-27 December).

Just for records the film collected 3.5 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 12 cinemas unreceived) while the rest of the collections are hardly worth a mention. In all the film has netted less than 10 lakhs in its opening week from India.

The Ranbir-Shazahn is a below average fare for its makers, who are also the worldwide distributors. ROCKET SINGH-SALESMAN OF THE YEAR has also been rejected in the Overseas grossing a poor ?121,569 from UK up to the third weekend (25-27 December) and an equally ordinary $164,649 from the US till the end of its run.
