Bollywood box-office report of the week : 1 november 2012

This week will see multiple releases in the form of the Aftab-Tia starrer 1920 – EVIL RETURNS, Anurag Kashyap's LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA, Rajpal Yadav's ATA PATA LAPATA and the zany comedy LE GAYA SADDAM. The front runner is likely to be Vikram Bhatt's 1920 – EVIL RETURNS while LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA will surely be patronized by Anurag's loyal fans. However, the biggest challenge will be posed by the latest James Bond flick, SKYFALL.

All the three releases of last week, Prakash Jha's CHAKRAVYUH (which opened on Wednesday), Emraan Hashmi's RUSH and Jackky Bhagnani's AJAB GAZABB LOVE, could not quite impress at the ticket window. Due to an early release CHAKRAVYUH managed to cross 10-11 crore during the extended 5-day weekend, but saw diminishing returns during each of the following days. While Vashu Bhagnani's AJAB GAZABB LOVE did see a pick up and netted 5 crores during the opening weekend, RUSH faced instant rejection netting just about 2.50 crore.

Meanwhile Karan Johar's STUDENT OF THE YEAR saw a rollicking opening week as it collected 6 crore from Bombay, 1.15 crore from Ahmedabad, 35.50 lakhs from Surat, 35.50 lakhs from Baroda, 30 lakhs from Rajkot, 1 crore from Pune, 24 lakhs from Nasik, 16 lakhs from Goa, 10 lakhs from Belgaum, 6 crore from Delhi city, 59.25 lakhs from Noida, 50.35 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 34.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 58.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 19 lakhs from Agra, 17 lakhs from Allahabad, 80 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 6 lakhs from Kurushetra, 10.55 lakhs from Panipat, 22.55 lakhs from Chandigarh, 40 lakhs from Jalandhar, 6.20 lakhs from Amritsar, 7.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 5.55 lakhs from Bhatinda, 6.35 lakhs from Ambala, 4 lakhs from Jammu, 2.50 crore from Calcutta, 2.65 lakhs from Darjeeling, 17.20 lakhs from Siliguri, 8 lakhs from Dhanbad, 6.50 lakhs from Ranchi, 12.50 lakhs from Guwahati, 60 lakhs from Nagpur, 31.50 lakhs from Raipur, 70 lakhs from Indore, 13.50 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 6.50 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 crore from Jaipur, 14 lakhs from Ajmer, 9.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 30.75 lakhs from Kota, 17 lakhs from Udaipur, 1.05 crore from Hyderabad, 20 lakhs from Aurangabad, 1.25 crore from Bangalore, 5.55 lakhs from Vijayawada, 8 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 7.50 lakhs from Madras and 4.55 lakhs from Kochi. Netting around 45 crore during the opening week SOTY is all set to be a successful film, more so due to the impressing second weekend. The film is also doing decently in the overseas grossing ?255,000 from UK and $538,000 from the US, till the second weekend (26-28 October).

The other two releases of the week, JANLEVA 555 and SHUDRA – THE RISING? were washouts. The third release, the animated DELHI SAFARI did manage face saving performance netting around 1.80 crore during the opening week from India.

All the three older releases, AIYYAA, BHOOT RETURNS and MAKKHI (dubbed) crashed completely in their second week and are commercial debacles. Just for stats, it was Rani's AIYYAA which fared the best, comparatively.

Moving on, Sridevi's ENGLISH VINGLISH saw another stable week collecting 1 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 12 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.75 lakhs from Surat, 5 lakhs from Baroda, 1 lakh from Rajkot, 24.15 lakhs from Pune, 3 lakhs from Nasik, 3.50 lakhs from Goa, 1.50 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.10 crore from Delhi city, 9.25 lakhs from Noida, 3 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Kanpur, 4 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Allahabad, 15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Faridabad, 2.20 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2 lakhs from Jalandhar, 33.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.10 lakhs from Guwahati, 4 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Raipur, 4 lakhs from Indore, 2.75 lakhs from Bhopal, 5 lakhs from Jaipur, 30 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1 lakh from Aurangabad, 75 lakhs from Bangalore, 1.55 lakhs from Vijayawada, 4.10 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 6.50 lakhs from Madras and 1.50 lakhs from Kochi. Adding another 5.50 crore, ENGLISH VINGLISH has netted 37 crores in three weeks from India and is a clean hit. The film has done wonderfully in the overseas grossing ? 445,000 from UK and $ 1,778,000 from the US, till the fourth weekend (26-28 October).

Concluding with Akshay Kumar's Paresh Rawal starrer, OMG OH MY GOD!the film continues to rake in the moolah collecting 1.10 crore from Bombay, 52 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 21.65 lakhs from Surat, 20.75 lakhs from Baroda, 16.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 25 lakhs from Pune, 4.60 lakhs from Nasik, 3.20 lakhs from Goa, 2 lakhs from Belgaum, 56.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 8.75 lakhs from Noida, 4.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4 lakhs from Kanpur, 8.75 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.50 lakhs from Agra, 1.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 10 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.15 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.50 lakhs from Chandigarh, 33 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 8.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 7.35 lakhs from Raipur, 15 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 4 lakhs from Bhopal, 10 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Ajmer, 2.15 lakhs from Kota, 2 lakhs from Udaipur, 10.65 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.15 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Bangalore and 1.25 lakhs from Visakhapatnam. With another 6.50 crore OMG OH MY GOD! Has netted 79 crore in four weeks from India and is a super duper hit. OMG! Has also done quite well (good in US) in the overseas grossing ?368,000 from UK and $915,000 from the US till the fifth weekend (26-28 October).
