Bollywood box-office report of the week : 10 february 2010

The coming Friday will see the release of undoubtedly one of the biggest and most awaited project of 2010, the film that brings back after almost 8 years the iconic SRK-Kajol pair in a film directed by none other than Karan Johar. Obviously we are referring to MY NAME IS KHAN. The minor hiccups not withstanding, the film is expected to embark on a historic start, not just in India but even in the Overseas, where it is likely to set new records.

Last Friday's Studio 18 and Makefilm's STRIKER paid the penalty of releasing a week before a biggie (MY NAME IS KHAN) and as a result, despite a novel theme and good execution, the film embarked on a very poor start across India. STRIKER is not expected to achieve anything significant at the ticket window.

Moving on to Ramgopal Varma's RANN, the film has not been appreciated by the classes as well as the masses. Looking at the numbers, RANN collected 1.30 crores from Bombay, 35 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 8 lakhs from Surat, 8.50 lakhs from Baroda, 3.25 lakhs from Rajkot, 1 lakh from Jamnagar, 1.25 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 1.40 lakhs each from Gandhidham and Belgaum, 11 lakhs from Pune, 2.50 lakhs from Nasik, 4.15 lakhs from Goa, 76.25 lakhs from Delhi city, 12.75 lakhs from Noida, 4 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 3 lakhs from Kanpur, 7 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.50 lakhs from Agra, 1.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs from Aligarh, 18.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 4.05 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.20 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1 lakh from Panipat, 13.65 lakhs from Calcutta, 6.25 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.20 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.20 lakhs from Raipur, 7 lakhs from Indore, 5.15 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.25 lakhs from Kota, 40 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad, 1.75 lakhs from Latur, 1.25 lakhs from Gulbarga, 16 lakhs from Bangalore and 1 lakh from Madras. In its opening week, the Amitabh, Riteish and Paresh starrer RANN has netted a very ordinary 7.50 crores in India. RANN is a huge failure that has also been rejected in the Overseas, grossing ?76,176 in the UK and $165,873 from the US, till the second weekend (5-7 February).

Meanwhile Vishal Bhardwaj's Abhishek Chaubey directed ISHQIYA has done quite well in many circuits of India. Netting a decent (for its cast and cost) 14 crores in its opening week, ISHQIYA is an average plus fare in India that is likely to improve its status further. The Naseer, Arshad and Vidya starrer has however been totally rejected in the Overseas grossing just $91,468 from the US up to the second weekend (5-7 February).

The third release of the same week, Amit Rai's well made ROAD TO SANGAM, has failed commercially, netting barely 10-15 lakhs from India, during its opening week.

Checking out EROS International and Vijay Galani Moviez's VEER, it has crashed heavily during the second week. Netting around 6 crore more, VEER has netted a below par 39 crores in two weeks from India. The Salman-Zarine starrer can at best be rated as a below average fare. VEER is just about alright in the Overseas (US), grossing from ?288,094 UK and $527,193 from US, up to the third weekend (5-7 February).

Concluding this week's column, perhaps for the last time with Rajkumar Hirani's Aamir, Madhavan, Sharman, Boman and Kareena starrer 3 IDIOTS, the news is that the film is now ending its phenomenal run. The all time blockbuster carries the same success to Overseas circuit as well grossing from ?1,818,316 from UK and a record smashing $6,463,622 from the US, up to the seventh weekend (5-7 February).
