The week will once again see multiple release in the form of the Nagesh Kukunoor directed MOD, Sanjay Leela Bhansali banner and UTV Motions Pictures' MY FRIEND PINTO, the lavishly mounted AZAAN, Yash Raj's MUJHSE FRAAANDSHIP KAROGE and JO DOOBA SO PAAR – IT'S LOVE IN BIHAR!. It is but obvious that the multiple releases will cut into each other but thanks to the superb promotion AZAAN may be able to make mark though the high budget will be a limiting factor. From the remaining releases of the week Yash Raj's MUJHSE FRAAANDSHIP KAROGE, aimed at the GenX lacks the buzz and musical backing usually associated with the banner, while MY FRIEND PINTO may at best find patronage at some high end cinemas.
Last week's major release, David Dhawan's Dutt-Ajay starrer, RASCALS, did see a good response on the opening day (Thursday- Dussehra) netting in excess of 7.50 crores, but the collections started sliding from the second day (6 crores) onwards. The 4-day extended weekend settled at around 23 crores and Monday onwards the collections fell heavily. Given the big budget RASCALS will find the going tough. The film has been rejected in the overseas grossing ?118,000 from UK and $168,000 from the US during the opening weekend (7-9 October).
From the remaining two releases, Zayed-Diya's LOVE BREAKUPS ZINDAGI was appreciated at some cinemas but the same could not translate into collections while Rajeev Khandelwal's SOUNDTRACK had to be content with just critical acclaim.
