Bollywood box-office report of the week : 14 april 2010

The coming Friday will see an interesting clash between Ramgopal Varma's PHOONK 2 and Milind Ukey's PAATHSHAALA. One feels that given the superb promos and the PHOONK brand value, it will be PHOONK 2 that will be the front runner followed by PAATHSHAALA. Though a few will be surprised by our predictions but once it comes to light that Shahid Kapoor does not have a full-fledged role in PAATHSHAALA it may prove counter productive for the film!

The new releases of last week, Vivek Oberoi's PRINCE, the Ritesh-Genelia starrer JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI and Aparna Sen's THE JAPANESE WIFE performed on expected lines. The front runner was PRINCE which performed very well at the single screens and also at the multiplexes of Indore, Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Gwalior. However, given the high budget one has to wait for the performance of the film during the weekdays before coming to a conclusion. The film though has been rejected in the Overseas grossing ?68,277 from UK and $89,047 from US. On the other hand the Milap Zaveri directed JAANE KAHAN SE AAYI HAI had a slow start with some improvement on Saturday and Sunday, but will it be enough is the question. Unfortunately THE JAPANESE WIFE just failed to appeal, to even its target multiplex audience and is a debacle.

As was obvious from the first show Luv Sinha's SADIYAAN was rejected instantly. The film despite the heavy duty support cast collected 3 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 25 cinemas unrecieved), 1.15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 10.20 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Kanpur, 1.75 lakhs from Lucknow and 1.25 lakhs from Gurgaon. The Raj Kanwar directed film has a shockingly low 70 lakhs in its opening week. SADIYAAN is a trade disaster.

Just as we had said, the Nana-Dimple starrer TUM MILO TOH SAHI fared best (if we can say that!) in the Bombay-Thane belt. The film collected 40 lakhs from Bombay(collections from 30 cinemas unreceived), 14.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.50 lakhs from Baroda, 1.15 lakhs from Pune(collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1.60 lakhs from Nasik, 1.25 lakhs from Goa, 27 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.30 lakhs from Noida, 1.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.05 lakhs from Kanpur, 4 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.15 lakhs from Allahabad, 6.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.70 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.55 lakhs from Chandigarh, 1.10 lakhs from Ludhiana, 3.10 lakhs from Calcutta, 2.30 lakhs from Nagpur, 2 lakhs from Raipur, 3 lakhs from Indore, 2.60 lakhs from Jaipur, 5 lakhs from Hyderabad and 3.55 lakhs from Bangalore. Netting around 2 crores in its opening week, TUM MILO TOH SAHI has failed at the ticket window.

Unfortunately the Bipasha Basu starrer PANKH managed pathetic collections and is one of the biggest disasters on 2010. The film could not touch even a figure of 20 lakhs!

Moving on to Arshad Warsi's maiden production venture, HUM TUM AUR GHOST could not improve on a very ordinary first week and crashed. The film collected 15 lakhs from Bombay, 3 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.30 lakhs from Baroda, 1.75 lakhs from Surat, 2.55 lakhs from Pune, 10.05 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs each from Noida and Ghaziabad, 1.70 lakhs from Lucknow, 2.05 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.10 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.55 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.50 lakhs each from Nagpur and Raipur, 1.15 lakhs from Indore and 1 lakh from Mangalore. The Arshad-Diya starrer is a huge flop. With another 80 lakhs HUM TUM AUR GHOST barely manages to touch 5 crores in two weeks from India. The film has flopped.

Shyam Benegal's WELL DONE ABBA was somewhat stable on the lower side collecting 20 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 8 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad and Pune, 12 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.10 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Kanpur, 1.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 5 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3 lakhs each from Calcutta and Bangalore. With another 75 lakhs in its kitty, WELL DONE ABBA has netted a below par 3 crores in two weeks and has failed commercially.

Coming to Dibaker Banerjee's LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA, the film managed to trickle in more numbers. The film collected 12 lakhs from Bombay, 1.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.70 lakhs from Pune, 10.20 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.50 lakhs from Noida, 1.20 lakhs each from Ghaziabad and Gurgaon, 3.15 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.10 lakhs from Hyderabad and 3.70 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 60 lakhs during its latest outing, LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA has a creditable 9 crores in three weeks from India. The film is more than an above average fare.

Concluding this week's report with ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE?, the film is ending its run and collected 6.50 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 9 cinemas unreceived), 2.65 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.60 lakhs from Baroda, 1 lakh from Pune, 5.55 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Noida, 1.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 2.60 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Agra, 2 lakhs from Allahabad, 1.35 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 5 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1 lakh from Raipur, 2.25 lakhs from Indore, 9.15 lakhs from Jaipur and 3 lakhs from Bangalore. Adding another 70 lakhs, ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? touches 29 crores in five weeks from India. The Ajay, Konkona and Paresh starrer zips past the above average status and is a rare success of 2010.
