A host of films are listed for release this Friday namely Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s Sunny Deol starrer MOHALLA ASSI, Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapoor’s PIHU, Kunaal Roy Kapoor’s HOTEL MILAN and possibly Govinda’s RANGEELA RAJA, the release of which depends on the outcome of a court battle regarding its certification. While none of the films are expected to achieve anything substantial at the ticket window, the much delayed MOHALLA ASSI and PIHU are expected to garner more critical acclaims than commercial.
Moving on to the most anticipated release, the Diwali extravaganza , Amitabh, Aamir, Katrina and Sana starrer, YRF’s THUGS OF HINDOSTAN, after a record breaking 50 crore opening day (including dubbed), the collections followed the law of diminishing returns. The extended opening weekend (4-days) was 120 crore plus (all versions) and Monday onwards the film crashed and the 8-day run may just about settle around the 138 crore mark (inclusive of dubbed) give or take couple of crores! The only bright spot is that YRF are also the worldwide distributors and have all the rights, including non-theatrical and overseas so they can lean on to it, to reduce their losses. THUGS OF HINDOSTAN has also been rejected in the overseas grossing $6.50m with £480,000 from UK and $1,500,000 from the US, during the opening weekend (9-11 November).
