Bollywood box-office report of the week : 16 september 2010

The coming Friday is almost an open week, with the English-Punjabi film, A DISTANT MIRAGE & Sona Jain's English film FOR REAL, listed for release. And that is a smart move as the DABANGG juggernaut (even in it's second weekend) will annihilate anything and everything in sight!

Coming to what is now well known, the DABANGG tsunami, the film continues to be strong during the weekdays, unlike the fall predictions! The Salman-Sonakshi starrer swept the nation from Mumbai to Muzaffarpur and from Chandigarh to Chennai. The film has reset many records and has till date beaten 3 IDIOTS' seemingly impossible to break first day, opening weekend etc. etc. … records and is threatening to overpower the first week (Friday-Thursday) record as well. The collections are huge both at the multiplexes as well as single screens. That DABANGG is a blockbuster is a foregone conclusion and the only question remaining to be answered is whether it will be an all time blockbuster or not.

The Abhinav Kashyap directed film has also rocked the Overseas grossing ?332,673 in UK and $628,137 from US during the opening weekend itself (10-12 September).

Checking out Karan Johar's WE ARE FAMILY, the film has not been appreciated much, though the collections have come in better than expected (in the weekdays). During the opening week WE ARE FAMILY collected 1.15 crores from Bombay (collections from 58 cinemas unreceived), 55 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 7.65 lakhs from Baroda, 2 lakhs from Bharuch, 7.25 lakhs from Rajkot (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 8.50 lakhs from Pune (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 6 lakhs from Nasik, 8.55 lakhs from Goa, 2.10 crores from Delhi city, 17 lakhs from Noida (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 12 lakhs from Ghaziabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 12.35 lakhs from Kanpur, 21.35 lakhs from Lucknow, 3 lakhs from Agra, 5.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs each from Bareilly and Aligarh, 4.25 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 40 lakhs from Gurgaon, 16.25 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.75 lakhs from Panipat, 15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 3 lakhs each from Bhatinda and Ambala, 4 lakhs from Amritsar, 6.55 lakhs from Ludhiana, 80 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Darjeeling, 5.25 lakhs each from Siliguri and Guwahati, 2.35 lakhs from Dibrugarh, 13.55 lakhs from Nagpur, 5.20 lakhs from Jabalpur, 4 lakhs from Raipur (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4.50 lakhs from Indore (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4.15 lakhs from Gwailor (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 3.15 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 25.65 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 6 cinemas unreceived), 3 lakhs each from Ajmer and Jodhpur, 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 5.25 lakhs from Kota, 13.65 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Gulbarga, 30 lakhs from Bangalore (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Vijaywada, 4 lakhs from Vishakhapatnam, 1.50 lakhs from Madras and 2.55 lakhs from Kochi. During its first run, WE ARE FAMILY has netted a below par 17.80 crores from India. The makers will have to rely on the non-theatrical rights to get into the safety zone. However, the Kajol, Arjun and Kareena starrer, WE ARE FAMILY, springs a huge surprise during its second weekend in the UK after a pedestrian opening weekend. The film showed an improvement over its first run by grossing ?457,815 from UK till the second weekend (10-12 September) and $410,876 in the US (till 9th September).

Moving on the collections of MALLIKA fell heavily after a dull start. The film collected 10 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 38 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.50 lakhs from Rajkot (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.55 lakhs from Kanpur, 2 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Bhopal and 5 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived).

Netting just about 65 lakhs during the opening week, MALLIKA is a debacle.

Adding another crore LAFANGEY PARINDEY has netted 22.50 crore in the three weeks from India and is an average grosser for the makers who are also the distributors. The Neil-Deepika starrer though is a washout in the Overseas grossing just ?29,359 from UK.

Meanwhile Aamir Khan's Anusha Rizvi directed PEEPLI [LIVE] collected 5 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 15 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Ahmedabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 10 lakhs from Delhi city, 2.15 lakhs from Noida (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 1 lakh from Allahabad, 2.65 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1 lakh from Chandigarh, 1.65 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Nagpur, 1.25 lakhs each from Jabalpur and Indore, 1.75 lakhs from Bhopal, 1 lakh from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived) and 2 lakhs from Bangalore. In the Overseas the starless PEEPLI [LIVE] has done wonders grossing $757,951 from US (till 9th September) and will release in UK on 24th September to an expected good response.

The Ajay-Emraan starrer is a hit plus in India but has been rejected in the Overseas grossing just ?126,696 from UK.
