The coming Friday will see three releases, the Tabu-Sharman starrer TOH BAAT PAKKI, the Sangeeth Sivan directed horror flick CLICK and last but not the least, the talented Rohit Batra written AAKHRI DECISION. It is obvious that TOH BAAT PAKKI will be the front runner, though all the three upcoming movies will find last Friday's MY NAME IS KHAN still hot to handle.
Last Friday's Karan Johar directed Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN, faced release problems in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh, for by now well known and discussed and done to death reasons. As a result the film lost around 2-3 crores. The terrorist attack in Pune on Saturday again hit the collections during the late shows. All said and done the collections at places where MNIK released flawlessly were excellent (barring C.P. and C.I. where it was just about average) at the multiplexes, but lower in single screens. However, as the weekend progressed, each day saw an improvement in collections over the previous day. Given the impediments and roadblocks, MY NAME IS KHAN, had a very good weekend to show. In the Overseas, MNIK is record breaking as expected and predicted. The film grossed ?936,000 from UK and $1,944,027 from US during its opening weekend (12-14 February).
What must be kept in mind is that MY NAME IS KHAN is a very expensive film, which has to do well for at least two weeks to be termed as a success. One factor that works in favour of MNIK sustaining well in the second week is that there are no big films (especially multiplex pleasing!) listed for release for quite sometime, February 26th to be precise, so MNIK should do well in the second week too. Fortunately MY NAME IS KHAN has a worldwide distributor in FOX and so any shortfall in domestic or Overseas can be countered by the other.
