With the fasting month of Ramzan from the coming weekend, we are likely to have the smaller ventures releasing during the next month or so.
And this Friday has Akshay Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Mahesh Manjrekar, Rehan Khan, Bhavna Pani starrer FAST FORWARD, the Milind Soman, Hrishita Bhatt and Naseer Khan project SHADOW and Madhavan's much delayed SIKANDAR.
From the list only the last mentioned (SIKANDAR) has some potential while the remaining two, FAST FORWARD and SHADOW, have little or no prospect. In most circuits, KAMINEY will still prove to be more than a handful for the new releases.
Quite expectedly, Vishal Bhardwaj's Shahid, Priyanka and Amole starrer, KAMINEY, embarked on a very good start, wherever it released. The collections improved during the weekend, though some fall was noticed in the smaller circuits like C.P. C.I. on Sunday itself. Of course it is now well known that KAMINEY could not release in Bombay-Thane and Pune during the last weekend due to the Swine flu scare, resulting in closure of cinemas and lost close to 4-5 crores on account of that. The good news is that from Monday the film has opened in Bombay-Thane and the response has been great.
However, trade feels that the 40 crore KAMINEY will have sectional appeal and so it looks difficult that it will be able to recover its huge investment. But thankfully indications are to the contrary, even during the weekdays! KAMINEY has also done superbly in the US (for a Shahid solo), grossing $726,834, though it's on the lower side in the UK with a gross of ?111,954.
Meanwhile the other release of the same week, Rumi Jaffery's Fardeen, Tusshar, Genelia and Prachi starrer, LIFE PARTNER too suffered a loss of 2-2.5 crore due to non release in Bombay-Thane and Pune. The film did release on Friday all over barring the mentioned places to an ordinary start, though it picked up quite well as the days progressed. The response after its release in Bombay from Monday has been heartening. Unfortunately, trade does not predict a great run for the film. LIFE PARNER has also done poorly in the Overseas, grossing $49,898 in the US but a much better gross of ?89,521 from the UK.
Moving on to Satish Kaushik's Ruslaan and Sheena starrer, TEREE SANG, the film did show some steady numbers during the week. A section of the audience patronized the film based on good feedback. The film collected 30 lakhs from Bombay, 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.15 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 13 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.65 lakhs from Noida, 2.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1.65 lakhs from Kanpur, 5 lakhs from Lucknow, 3 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.75 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.50 lakhs from Indore, 1 lakh each from Bhopal and Jaipur and 5.25 lakhs from Hyderabad. Netting around 2.50 crores in its opening week from India, TEREE SANG will struggle to recover its costs, though losses will be minimum, thanks to its shoestring budget.
While on Imtiaz Ali's Rishi, Saif and Deepika starrer, LOVE AAJ KAL, the film fell heavily in its second week, like most over saturated releases. The film collected 1.35 crores from Bombay (collections from 50 cinemas unrecieved), 50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.25 lakhs from Himmatnagar, 1.35 lakhs from Palanpur, 3.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 3 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.30 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 8.30 lakhs from Pune, 2 lakhs from Solapur, 1.10 lakhs from Sangli, 6.50 lakhs from Nasik, 1.75 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.75 crores from Delhi city, 30 lakhs from Noida, 17 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 16 lakhs from Kanpur, 30 lakhs from Lucknow, 8 lakhs from Agra, 1.35 lakhs from Allahabad, 3.50 lakhs from Meerut, 3 lakhs from Bareilly, 4.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 5 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 1.65 lakhs from Muzaffarnagar, 44.15 lakhs from Gurgaon, 9 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.20 lakhs from Zirakpur, 1.50 lakhs from Panipat, 2 lakhs from Pathankot, 4.10 lakhs from Jammu, 12.50 lakhs from Calcutta, 3 lakhs from Guwahati, 18 lakhs from Nagpur, 3 lakhs from Jabalpur, 2.75 lakhs from Amravati, 1.35 lakhs from Akola, 3 lakhs from Raipur, 1.10 lakhs from Wardha, 10.50 lakhs from Indore, 3.35 lakhs from Bhopal, 40 lakhs from Jaipur, 5 lakhs each from Jodhpur and Ajmer, 3 lakhs from Bikaner, 1.50 lakhs from Kota, 42 lakhs from Hyderabad, 3 lakhs from Aurangabad, 2.75 lakhs from Nanded, 5 lakhs from Mangalore and 1.75 lakhs from Coimbatore. The second week has seen LOVE AAJ KAL add another 16.25 crores and has netted a huge 59.25 crores so far. Saif Ali Khan's first home banner venture is now a clear hit. The film also has excellent collections to show from Overseas, grossing $2,333,925 from US and ?950,337 from UK.
Concluding this week's report with Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd.'s Soham Shah directed Mithun, Dutt, Imran, Shruti and Danny starrer, LUCK, the film is breathing its last collecting 7.50 lakhs from Bombay, 8 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 4.50 lakhs from Surat, 1 lakh from Nadiad, 2.75 lakhs from Baroda, 2.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.05 lakhs from Jamnagar, 2.75 lakhs from Kanpur, 2.20 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 1.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 3.50 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.35 lakhs from Aurangabad. With another 1.25 crores, LUCK has netted around 21.75 crores in three weeks from India. LUCK has also been dismissed in the Overseas, grossing $149,333 from US and ?153,467 from UK. The film is a trade disaster and the worldwide distributors Studio 18 stand to lose in excess of 25 crores.
