This week sees an unusual contest as Ramgopal Varma's RANN takes on Vishal Bhardwaj's Abhishek Chaubey directed ISHQIYA. Both the films are not your routine Bollywood masala and that is a rare happening and so the outcome becomes interesting. One feels that given the star cast and a bigger hype, the Amitabh Bachchan starrer RANN is likely to dominate the Naseer project ISHQIYA, though the margin will be slender (barring Bombay circuit).
In fact there is another film that is ready to take on the might of RANN and ISHQIYA and it is ROAD TO SANGAM. And believe it or not, it is the third unusual theme film of this week!
Last Friday saw the release of EROS International and Vijay Galani Moviez's VEER. And the film went as per predictions. The Anil Sharma directed Salman-Zarine starrer VEER released at 120 cinemas of Bombay-Thane (Thru EROS International) and saw a very good opening in single screen cinemas and an ordinary to dull start at the multiplexes. Outside of Bombay the opening of VEER was bumper in Rajasthan and excellent in single screen cinemas of U.P. and C.I. but ordinary in Delhi and some other big cities. Trade feels that VEER has masala for the masses and single screen cinemas but not enough for the multiplexes. The film is expected to do well in circuits like Rajasthan , U.P., Bihar and C.I. but it will be difficult to recover its 65 crore budget, even after the non-theatrical rights have been accounted for. In the Overseas VEER has grossed an ordinary ?148,423 from UK and a slightly better $334,562 from US, during the opening weekend (22-24 January).
