Bollywood box-office report of the week : 3 february 2010

This week will see a solo release in the form of Chandan Arora's Siddharth starrer STRIKER. Yes, there is also THE HANGMAN but it is an English language film and even otherwise it will not achieve anything significant. Coming back to STRIKER, the film has managed to arouse curiosity, based on another sustained innovative publicity campaign by Studio 18 and also due to the fact that it brings back the RANG DE BASANTI star after four years (Siddharth) and he teams up with the director (Chandan Arora) of films like MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON and MAIN MERI PATNI AUR WOH. And on that count the film may score at places.

Last Friday's three way 'unconventional' clash between Ramgopal Varma's RANN, Vishal Bhardwaj's ISHQIYA and the Amit Rai directed ROAD TO SANGAM went in favour of the Abhishek Chaubey directed ISHQIYA. While RANN saw a very dull opening in Bombay-Thane, the start was unbelievably poor across India. On the other hand ISHQIYA had a good start in Bombay-Thane and the opening was also good in Delhi, U.P and C.P. Berar but not up to the mark in Gujarat and some other places.

Trade feels that RANN will fail to make a mark anywhere and ISHQIYA will do well in pockets and at some multiplexes. The third release, ROAD TO SANGAM, has no commercial prospects, despite being a well made film. Even in the Overseas, both RANN and ISHQIYA saw ordinary collections. Looking at the numbers RANN grossed ? 44,544 from UK and $ 1, 17,088 from US and ISHQIYA had a gross of just $ 58,521 from US, all for the opening weekend (29-31 January).
