Bollywood box-office report of the week : 3 february 2011

Advtg.

The coming Friday has as many as three releases, and the list includes YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, UNITED SIX and UTT PATAANG. It is obvious that none of the listed releases are going to achieve anything significant though the Sudhir Mishra directed Chitrangada Singh starrer, YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, will (comparatively) fare the best.

The start of Madhur Bhandarkar's DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI was never expected to be great, and that is how it turned out to be. However the film did open slow but it picked up noticeably, resulting in a decent weekend, though it should have netted more than 15 crore or so that it collected, if we take into consideration the huge number of prints in circulation for a Bhandarkar film (1,400 screens in India & 102 in the Overseas, second only to FASHION). Thankfully, the Ajay-Emraan has been sold to the distributors at a very reasonable price of 13 crores and should bring in profits for all concerned. The makers of the 24-25 crore DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI are already in the profit zone as they have pre-sold the non-theatrical rights as well. The film is poor in the Overseas grossing ?19,000 from UK during the opening weekend (28-30 January).

The opening of Kiran Rao's DHOBI GHAT was quite dull, but thanks to the presence of Aamir Khan the film managed a decent weekend. Unfortunately the film could not capitalize on it (despite the Republic Day holiday) and saw quite an ordinary run. The film collected 1.80 crores from Bombay (collections from 26 cinemas unreceived), 35.75 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 8.55 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 1.30 lakhs from Vapi, 1 lakh from Bharuch, 5 lakhs from Rajkot (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Jamnagar, 26.35 lakhs from Pune (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1.65 lakhs from Solapur, 6 lakhs from Nasik, 1.15 lakhs from Malegaon, 9 lakhs from Goa, 3 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.55 crores from Delhi city, 23.25 lakhs from Noida, 11 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 8 lakhs from Kanpur, 14 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 4 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs from Aligarh, 2.60 lakhs from Gorakhpur, 41.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 10 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.75 lakhs from Panipat, 9.20 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2 lakhs from Zirakpur, 5 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2 lakhs from Bhatinda, 1 lakh from Ambala, 3 lakhs from Ludhiana, 2 lakhs from Amritsar, 90 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 4.25 lakhs from Siliguri, 5.50 lakhs from Guwahati, 15.75 lakhs from Nagpur, 4.25 lakhs from Jabalpur, 1.20 lakhs from Akola, 8.15 lakhs from Raipur, 18 lakhs from Indore, 2 lakhs from Gwalior, 8 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 19 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.50 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Bikaner, 5 lakhs from Kota, 35 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 3.75 lakhs from Latur, 1.60 lakhs from Gulbarga, 50 lakhs from Bangalore, 5.60 lakhs from Mangalore, 1.20 lakhs from Vijaywada, 4.25 lakhs from Vishakhapatnam, 4.50 lakhs from Madras (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived) and 2.15 lakhs from Kochi. Netting around 13 crores during the opening week, DHOBI GHAT will rely on the non-theatrical rights. Fortunately, the makers of the 11 crore (including print and publicity) film are also the worldwide distributors and so DHOBI GHAT will be a profitable venture for them. The Aamir-Prateik starrer has done decently in the Overseas (good in the US) grossing ?198,000 from UK and $521,582 from US till the second weekend.(28-30 January)
