The coming Friday has as many as three releases, and the list includes YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, UNITED SIX and UTT PATAANG. It is obvious that none of the listed releases are going to achieve anything significant though the Sudhir Mishra directed Chitrangada Singh starrer, YEH SAALI ZINDAGI, will (comparatively) fare the best.
The start of Madhur Bhandarkar's DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI was never expected to be great, and that is how it turned out to be. However the film did open slow but it picked up noticeably, resulting in a decent weekend, though it should have netted more than 15 crore or so that it collected, if we take into consideration the huge number of prints in circulation for a Bhandarkar film (1,400 screens in India & 102 in the Overseas, second only to FASHION). Thankfully, the Ajay-Emraan has been sold to the distributors at a very reasonable price of 13 crores and should bring in profits for all concerned. The makers of the 24-25 crore DIL TOH BACCHA HAI JI are already in the profit zone as they have pre-sold the non-theatrical rights as well. The film is poor in the Overseas grossing ?19,000 from UK during the opening weekend (28-30 January).
The opening of Kiran Rao's DHOBI GHAT was quite dull, but thanks to the presence of Aamir Khan the film managed a decent weekend. Unfortunately the film could not capitalize on it (despite the Republic Day holiday) and saw quite an ordinary run. Netting around 13 crores during the opening week, DHOBI GHAT will rely on the non-theatrical rights. Fortunately, the makers of the 11 crore (including print and publicity) film are also the worldwide distributors and so DHOBI GHAT will be a profitable venture for them.
