Bollywood box-office report of the week : 30 december 2010

Adv.

This Friday will see an almost open week as there is just the much delayed ADA … A WAY OF LIFE and Jackie Shroff's BHOOT AND FRIENDS. Needless to add that both the films will sink without a trace and it will benefit last week's TEES MAAR KHAN and Yash Raj Films' old release BAND BAAJA BAARAAT (which has got additional shows this week). Last week's three releases, Farah Khan's TEES MAAR KHAN, the live animation project TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO, and the Rajshri venture ISI LIFE MEIN…! fared expectedly. While the Akshay-Katrina starrer set a blistering pace and ended up with the second best weekend ever (after DABANGG), the Ajay-Kajol venture had a very dull start and could not improve much during the weekend. The limited release venture ISI LIFE MEIN..! had a very poor start and was rejected from the first show itself.

However, trade feels that due to the negativity about TEES MAAR KHAN, the film will not be able to sustain at the same level, but given the huge weekend, it will end up as a profitable venture. The other two releases of the week have no future and in fact at many places it is the two week old BAND BAAJA BAARAAT that is the second choice after TEES MAAR KHAN. In the Overseas, both ISI LIFE MEIN …! and TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO are disasters. Even TEES MAAR KHAN has not done the business that it should have given the extended Christmas weekend, grossing a very ordinary ?318,419 (including paid previews on Tue, Wed and Thur) from UK (24-26 December) and $741,162 from US (22-26 December).

Though it fared best from the bunched December 17 releases, still MIRCH could not achieve much as it collected 35 lakhs from Bombay, 3 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2 lakhs from Baroda, 1 lakh from Surat, 5 lakhs from Pune, 10 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.25 lakhs from Noida, 1 lakh from Ghaziabad, 1.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 5 lakhs from Calcutta (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 1 lakh from Nagpur, 1.20 lakhs from Raipur, 2 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Jaipur, 2 lakhs from Hyderabad (collections from other cinemas unreceived) and 4 lakhs from Bangalore. The film managed around 1 crore during its first week and is a losing fare. Wilson Louis's KAALO had a poor run as it collected 10 lakhs from Bombay, 1.10 lakhs from Ahmedabad and 2 lakhs from Delhi city. The film managed barely 25 lakhs during the opening week and is a disaster. The other two releases of the same week, PAYBACK and 332… MUMBAI TO INDIA, have negligible collections and are washouts.
