Bollywood box-office report of the week : 6 march 2014

This Friday will see multiple releases in the form of Ali Zafar's TOTAL SIYAPPA, Madhuri-Juhi starrer GULAAB GANG (subject to court orders) and the Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao venture, QUEEN. Though the multiple releases will cut into each other, the front runner is likely to be Anubhav Sinha's GULAAB GANG with Kangana Ranaut's QUEEN in hot pursuit and followed by TOTAL SIYAPPA scoring a few points thanks to actor Ali Zafar's popularity.

Checking out last Friday's SHAADI KE SIDE EFFECTS, very much as expected after a good to decent first day (Friday), the film picked up beautifully on Saturday and Sunday netting a good 22 crore during the opening weekend. The film is on way to emulate the success of its predecessor, PYAAR KE SIDE EFFECTS. The Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar starrer, SHAADI KE SIDE /EFFECTS, has also done very well in the overseas (surpassing Farhan's previous venture BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG), grossing $1.8m with ?132,000 from UK and $583,000 from the US, during the first weekend (28 Feb-2 March).

Netting 22 crore during the opening week, HIGHWAY is a below average fare. The film has done reasonably in the overseas grossing ?175,000 from UK and $480,000 from the US till the second weekend (28 Feb-2 March).

The other prominent release of the week, Jimmy Shergill's DARR @ THE MALL managed just about fare collections with 85 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5 lakhs from Surat, 4 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 3 lakhs from Rajkot, 20 lakhs from Pune, 3.50 lakhs from Nasik, 1.75 lakhs from Goa, 35 lakhs from Delhi city, 5.25 lakhs from Noida, 6.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 4.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 5.65 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.55 lakhs from Allahabad, 5lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 3.50 lakhs from Chandigarh, 2.25 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2.55 lakhs from Ludhiana, 15 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.25 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.50 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 8.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.15 lakhs from Jabalpur, 5.15 lakhs from Raipur, 10 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Gwalior, 10 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 1.75 lakhs from Ajmer, 1.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 10 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1.50 lakhs from Aurangabad, 10 lakhs from Bangalore, 2 lakhs from Mangalore, 1.65 lakhs from Vijayawada, 2 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1.15 lakhs from Madras. Netting a so-so 5 crore during the opening week, DARR @ THE MALL will have to rely on non-theatrical rights for recovery.

The two remaining releases of the same week, KARAR THE DEAL and DEE SATURDAY NIGHT are washouts.

Adding another 13 crore, GUNDAY has netted 75 crore in two weeks from India and is a semi-hit given that the makers are also the worldwide distributors, and they have already recovered more than 60 percent of their investment through the non-theatrical rights. GUNDAY has also done quite well in the overseas grossing ?415,000 from UK and $888,000 from the US till the third weekend (28 Feb-2 March).

Concluding with Karan Johar's Sidharth, Adah and Parineeti starrer, HASEE TOH PHASEE, the film is on its last legs at select metro multiplexes. Just for records, the film added another 1.80 crore during its latest run thus netting 35.80 crore during three weeks from India and is as an above average fare. HASEE TOH PHASEE has done well in the overseas (more so in US) grossing ?150,000 from UK and $635,000 from the US.
