With the expected blockbuster run of Salman Khan?s BODYGUARD still on, the coming Friday will witness the release of the Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan and Ali Zafar starrer, MERE BROTHER KI DULHAN. The film may not be able to touch the opening of BODYGUARD even with a large poll but will certainly have a good to decent start, and if the word of mouth is positive the 25 crore film may be another success for Yash Raj Films. Of course the biggest challenge will come from the still super strong BODYGUARD.
All that has to be said and analyzed about the amazing run of Salman Khan?s BODYGUARD is all over the web as well as the print and broadcast media. Having said that here are the stats! BODYGUARD has netted a humungous 86 crores in five days during extended Eid-Ganesh Chaturthi weekend. And that is more than Hindi cinema?s best ever first week, held by another Salman Khan starrer, DABANGG (80.50 crore). Not only that, BODYGUARD also has the distinction of netting 100 crores in just 7 days flat! The film continues its dream run even during the week days. BODYGUARD is also doing superbly in the overseas and will be Salman?s biggest hit in that circuit. The film has grossed ?840,000 from UK and $1,051,132 from US during the extended weekend.
Needless to add that the other films that released along side- BOL, THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS and MUMMY PUNJABI- have been blown away by the BODYGUARD tsunami. It was just BOL and to a lesser extent THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS that showed some signs of pick up on Saturdays at select cinemas, but both flattered to deceive and ended up with a poor to dismal numbers. Had the two chosen another day to release and not alongside BODYGUARD, the performances would have been better.
Coming to the older releases, SHABRI, STAND BY, CHITKABREY – SHADES OF GREY and YEH DOORIYAN, it is the same old story as before. The collections were dismal and the films netted below 50 lakhs during the whole week (some were discontinued on Wednesday for BODYGUARD), with SHABRI faring the best!
