Bollywood box-office report of the week : 9 december 2010

Adv.

The coming Friday will see a very interesting clash as Anees Baazmee's NO PROBLEM is all set to take on the latest offering from the Yash Raj stable, BAND BAAJA BAARAAT. Certainly the multi-starrer comic caper, NO PROBLEM, appears to be clear favourite at this point of time, as far as the opening goes but we would like to stick out our neck and pick BAND BAAJA BAARAAT as the dark horse due to its popular music and unconventional yet identifiable theme.

Last Friday saw three releases in the form of Ashutosh Gowariker's KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, the RGV directed RAKHT CHARITRA 2 and the relatively lesser known PHAS GAYA RE OBAMA. Though the Abhishek-Deepika starrer was not expected to set the box-office on fire but the horrific start and poor weekend of the historical has shocked the trade. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is also washout in the Overseas grossing just ?14,417 from UK during the opening weekend (3-5 December).

On the other hand RAKHT CHARITRA 2 was never expected to do well (as it was the sequel of a flop film) and that is what happened. The last release of the week, Subhash Kapoor's PHAS GAYA RE OBAMA fared the best and showed better legs than its more reputed release partners. However its limited release means that it won't achieve anything significant.

Netting just about 14.75 crores, the Imran-Deepika starrer sees a sad fate at the ticket window. One must add here that the 50 percent of its cost that BREAK KE BAAD recovered from non-theatrical revenues makes it a safe project. The film has been rejected in the Overseas grossing ?152,535 from UK till the second weekend (3-5 December) and $310,329 from US.

Sunny Deol's fungus laden KHUDA KASAM collected 1 lakh from Ahmedabad, 5 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 1 lakh from Lucknow and 1 lakh from Bikaner. Needless to add, KHUDA KASAM is a washout, netting just about 50 lakhs during its opening week.

Despite all the critical acclaim ALLAH KE BANDAY has poor numbers to show as it collected 20 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 34 cinemas unrecieved), 4.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 2 cinemas unrecieved), 1 lakh from Pune, 5 lakhs from Delhi city, 1.15 lakhs each from Noida, Ghaziabad and Lucknow, 1.50 lakhs from Gurgaon and 1 lakh from Chandigarh. Netting 65 lakhs during its first week, ALLAH KE BANDAY saw no divine intervention and it is a trade disaster.

With a very ordinary 5.75 crores, GUZAARISH has netted a poor 27.75 crores in two weeks from India. The Hrithik-Aishwarya starrer is a huge debacle. The film has also under-performed in the Overseas grossing ?341,802 in the UK and $989,527 from the US till the third weekend (3-5 December).
