AGENT VINOD: Return of spy movie after a long time

That Saif Ali Khan has a hit product in his repertoire in the form of AGENT VINOD and it seems to be a premise that is manifest from Saif Ali Khan's announcement that he want to establish six sequels to AGENT VINOD. Indeed, spy films are able to establish a romantic liaison with the audience world over on account of the latent urge amongst all of us to spy and snoop around. It is just that the cinema provides the escapade on a large canvas and therefore spy films have been a huge success in Hindi cinema.

Before AGENT VINOD the last successful spy on the Indian screen was GUNMASTER G9, a brand created by Ravikant Nagaich where Mithun Chakraborty enacted the role of spy G-9. The brand continued for some time, but somehow it vanished one fine day and the Indian audience was left twiddling its thumbs. The magic of G-9 was seen to be believed even in small towns in the country.

Indian audience loves spy stories is manifest from the fact that we have a rich repertoire of such films from the past, most successful being AANKHEN (1968 film). But if a spy story still rivets the audience to their seats for sheer performance, it has to be KHEL KHEL MEIN, it was a film way ahead of its times for its content and the manner in which it was treated. Or for that matter JEWEL THIEF where till the end one did not know who was the culprit.

Indeed, if the genre of spy-based stories could establish an instant rapport with the audience, it owed primarily to the fact that Dev Anand experimented with this genre in a big way and he started it with PREM PUJARI. It was not a big commercial success, but it paved the way for Dev Anand to start the tradition of two-three heroines in a film and he was able to give both the heroines a sense of space by using the genre of spy based stories. The premise of spies in Hindi films was turned on its head in a big way in SHOLAY where Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan in combination with Asrani deconstructed the notion of a spy in a hilarious manner.

Those film stars who experimented with this genre were a big hit with the audience and those who can be included under this category include, Raj Kumar, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna. As a matter of fact, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra both dabbled with the genre of spy films in the early stages of their career, Jeetendra with FARZ and Rajesh Khanna with RAJ.

The underlining premise of the spy stories was the music of the film, and invariably in all the spy films music was a big hit. In case of AGENT VINOD the music is slowly gaining ground, and one only hopes that it contributes to the success of the film, otherwise Saif Ali Khan would have to give a second thought to coming out with six sequels of AGENT VINOD.
