Kirron Kher is the new ‘Punjabi mom’ of Bollywood. But the actor doesn’t like this tag. Our correspondent quizzes her on this and more.

Is it true that you are no longer interested in being the ‘Punjabi mom’ of Bollywood?
Yes, because after playing Punjabi moms in so many films, I feel bored. All the roles are monotonous at some point or the other. I am an actor and there are other facets of Kirron Kher. But it’s sad that filmmakers are not ready to experiment with actresses.

How did you get this ‘Punjabi mom’ tag?
I don’t know. And I still don’t understand what makes the filmmakers think that no one can portray Punjabi moms better than I do (laughs).

What’s your role in Akshay-Kareena starrer KAMBAKKHT ISHQ?
It’s a short fun-filled role. I play Dolly Aunty, an NRI lady with Punjabi accent (this time, for a change I play Punjabi Aunty instead of mom!). She is like those

“Anupam is my best friend…”

typical aunts who are always gossiping and fixing marriage. I try to match-fix for Kareena Kapoor, who is against marriage.

You are judging a reality show for the first time. How’s the experience?
I am co-judging India’s Got Talent with Shekhar Kapur and Sonali Bendre. I was a bit nervous initially, especially before the rehearsals. But now, I am thoroughly enjoying the show. But shooting for 14-15 hours at a stretch is really tiring.

What are your judging criteria?
I go by my heart. If an act impresses me, I praise it whole-heartedly, if not, then ‘sorry’.

You are always smiling. Don’t you ever feel angry?
I am quite moody. But I don’t act irrationally. See, smile is the best solution to every problem.

Whenever we think of Kirron Kher, we think of heavily-worked sarees and heavy accessories. Do you enjoy decking up even before joining the industry, or is it just to maintain the star status?
Name a woman who doesn’t enjoy decking up! I am always particular about what I wear and how I look. I have a fascination over sarees.

What are the other films you are working in?
There’s a Karan Johar film… it’s not JEHAAD, I am forgetting the name. And then there is Vipul Shah’s ACTION REPLAY.

We are not seeing much of your son Sikandar on-screen…
He is presently reading scripts. We don’t want him to hurry and take any wrong decision, especially at the beginning of his career.

Both Anupam Kher and you are busy bees. Do you still feel the urge to spend time with each other?
Anupam is not only my husband, he is my best friend. Even today, we look for opportunities to spend time with each other. And to be honest with you, Anupam was, is and will always be with me and for me, whenever I need him.
