Does FUKREY RETURNS, the sequel to the 2013 hit FUKREY from the trendsetters of modern day friendship Excel Entertainment (DIL CHAHTA HAI, ROCK ON, ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA) in their desi ode to ‘bhaichara’ ( brotherhood, friendship) stays true to stay together with the audience or goes ‘Awara’ (losses its way) let’s find out.

Don,t whistle, a snake might have his day, says the adorable and funny symbol of goofyisms Choocha aka Varun Sharma as he is wandering in the bushes at night along with his favorite Hunny (Pulkit Samrat). Hunny pays no heed and a serpent bites him. In a weird but funny ode to Bollywood’s naag and nagin stories, the serpent turns out to be the Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadha) in a ‘naagin’ avatar and she dances with Choocha with glee glee.. hee hee. Nagin ka inteqam..ha ha..

So, it’s past one year and things begin from where the first part had ended. Choocha has not given up on his habit of having weird dreams (the above sequence is the opening scene) and Hunny is playing with his knowledge of numerology and both Choocha and Hunny are livingly merrily by playing lottery. Writer – director Mrighdeep Lamba with Vipul Vig (story) stay true to the Delhi milieu dobara (once again). While Choocha is happy with his bizarre dreams, Hunny is doing good in his ‘business’ and has gone further, he has asked for his girlfriend Priya (Priya Anand) hand from her father. Zafar (Ali Fazal) is planning to settle with the love of his life Neetu (Vishakha Singh). While things with Lali (Manjot Singh) are almost the same, the innocent chap is still to find a girlfriend and the wrath of his father who thinks his son is good for nothing continues. The quirky lady don Bholi Punjaban (Richa Chadha) is in jail and is desperate to come out from the prison. So the sequel is true to its genre, the characters are completely in sync and remarkably for those who have not seen the prequel, it’s not that difficult to get introduced to the Fukras.

In jail and completely penny less Bholi hatches a plan to earn booty of Rs 10 crore as a return in exchange of her freedom to the wicked politician Bhatia (Rajiv Gupta). To earn the booty, Bholi enters into the life of Fukra’s – Hunny, Choocha, Lali and Zafar and from here the proceedings take a hilarious quirky turn which are sometimes bizarre, sometimes black, sometimes goofy and sometimes a challenge to the believers of buffoonery and illogical goofisyms, but overall a ‘citi’ bajao fun for the lovers of such genre and those who loved FUKREY and made it a success.

Some of the sequences are a cracker with Choocha – Varun Sharma at the helm of affairs enjoying the fun. His dreaming later turns into premoniting which is sometimes on and sometimes off but the set up and establishment is designed to tickle your funny bones and it does.

The first half is almost a nonstop cracker of fun, especially for those who have loved the prequel. It’s an achievement for director Mrighdeep Lamba and writer Vipul Vig to maintain the essence and quality of the genre. A pious follow up to a hit franchise is not at all a routine.

During the second half, the movie in its ‘dream’ and ‘premonition’ try to be bigger and better. This is the problem with follow ups, once the prequel establishes the concept and characters which are fresh and new at that time, struggle to get extra nuances in the sequel but FUKREY RETURNS suffer from a different disease. The makers want to make it a bigger and better commercial success and in the ambition to reach the wider audience get into the routine thriller drama mode revolving a corrupt politician and start losing focus.

With events like a tiger inside a tunnel which found after digging poses a serious challenge to the believers of buffoonery and illogical goofisyms which asks you to flee from the tunnel at the earliest as tiger seriously threatens to eat all the fun you just had. But thankfully, Choocha comes in for rescue and when the cub is seen massaging his back, the audience forget the logic and enjoy the fun.

Technically sound with rich production values, Cinematographer Andre Menezes’ captures Delhi with a passionate eye. Editing by Dev Rao Jadhav is fine. Music by Sameer Uddin goes with the mood and is not a hindrance.

FUKREY RETURNS is powered by some kick ass actors who give terrific performances and add significant value to the fun.
Varun Sharma tops the list with an endearing performance from start to the finish. Varun Sharma as Choocha is all fun, the hospital scene is a cracker. Entertainment to the core.

Pankaj Tripathi as Panditji is in one word – Outstanding. The gifted actor with his sudden dash of English is a stealer.

Richa Chadha is in her element and proves what a strong performer she is with Bholi once again.

Pulkit Samrat is effortlessly natural and charming.

Ali Fazal gets less scope, may be due to his international commitments where he has excelled but he provides the required support.

Manjot Singh is fantastic once again.

Priya Anand and Vishakha Singh just add to the glamour.

Rajiv Gupta as the mean corrupt politician is marvelous.

All said and done, we conclude by recollecting a scene from the film, Panditji (Pankaj Tripathi) makes an entry, a man asks him “who are you’ he replies ‘Khamakha’ (rough translation – something that just happened), he then asks “ what brings you here, he again says ‘khamakha’. In the world of Bollywood which constantly witnesses ‘Khamakha’ sequels (because some of them just happened for the sake of happening and cashing on the success of prequel). This quirky and weird follow up of the 2013 hit FUKREY – FUKREY RETURNS which begins with a ‘Nagin’ bite and ends with a tiger found roaring in a tunnel is certainly not a ‘Khamakha’ sequel for those who loved FUKREY and the lovers of such genre for sure.
