Dear Neha Dhupia,
Am sorry to say this, the follow up of your shot to fame with the 2004 JULIE where you gave the most striking statement of its time during the film’s promotion “ Only sex and Shah Rukh Khan sell” is unfortunately not working here.
Pahlaj Nihalani’s follow up coming after 13 years obviously doesn,t has SRK ( that’s another matter that Shah Rukh Khan’s equation at the box office is changing) but the worry is JULIE 2 in spite of some oomph of south fame Raai Laxmi is not selling ( or say not working) either in this Deepak Shivdasani helmed bizarre and pointless follow up narrow mindedly aimed to make just a money spinning franchise.
A complete ‘compromise’ in the name of novelty in scripting the movie that tries to follow the beaten terrain of the rise of a female star in cinema Julie (Raai Laxmi) and the ‘compromise’ she goes through. Julie later seeks solace in spirituality only to be allured by the arch lights dobara (again) from a politician to star in his wife’s biopic that leads her to a dark path.
Though Raai Laxmi is a good choice for the role but the movie is equally bad with surrealism having its say almost from the beginning. From Ravi Kishen in a overpowering Bhojpuri accent to a shocking Rati Agnihotri to forgettable Pankaj Tripathi, the movie is a painful waste of fine talents.
Further the movie is laced with dialogues like “Sooraj barf pighla sakta hai aur ek shilpkar ki murti bhi sakht kar sakta hai” ( rough translation : the sun can melt the ice and help the sculptor to get his sculpture right). I am still to find the point behind this wisdom as well the reason behind this follow up and promise to get back when I succeed, till then I conclude with the line Raai Laxmi says, “ Apni baat keh ke mere dil ka bojh utar gaya”, (you know what I mean).
