Dwayne Johnson, ‘The Rock’ is back with his special skills and surprise surprise, the action hero (which is a mix of Salman Khan, and Sunny Deol) wears a shirt rather than his trade mark under armor and delivers punches of eye rolling action in this strangely titled action thriller helmed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
We have seen Paul Newman doing the rescue act in TOWERING INFERNO much earlier in 1974, and we all are familiar with Bruce Wills’ remarkable DIE HARD act, similarly in SKYSCRAPER people are trapped in buildings and need to be rescued. While DIE HARD and TOWERING INFERNO had a better establishment/reason behind the rescue, the motivation behind Dwayne Johnson’s specialized heroism in SKYSCRAPER is more manipulative and conveniently plotted.
A 240-story building is set on fire in order to get a pen drive stored safely in the penthouse of a Chinese billionaire. Perfect time for Dwayne Johnson as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader Will Sawyer now in charge of security for skyscrapers up to the rescue act with an artificial leg. A group of East-European armed force has set the tallest and the safest building in China ablaze. Will Sawyer is also framed for the blaze and he is on the run. Will Sawyer now has to clear his name and rescue his family which is trapped in that fire.
This is the kind of movie that convincingly explains why Dwayne Johnson is a huge draw as he pulls himself up 100 or so stories on a construction crane and leaps to an open window. The artificial leg hardly makes any difference to his character in the film. The continuous suspension of disbelief in repeated sessions during the stunts in fact goes well with the masses that will be thrilled by this high adrenaline escapism without the opium. Dwayne Johnson does everything, rescues his combat-surgeon wife (Neve Campbell), protects his kid; destroy the East-European enemy responsible for the fire, as the laws of gravity and fire obey a different rule in China.
This is undoubtedly sheer escapism without the opium, its high adrenaline fun that shows Dwayne Johnson in his best phase at present.
Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE, WE’RE THE MILLERS), this action-thriller is a treat if you love action and/or Dwayne Johnson… just kick your brain out of the theatre and enter…
