A relevant feminist mission gone wrong and turned into a pointless clap trap designed to please those juvenile pseudo revolutionaries we find popping up on social media.
The Story of TOTTAA PATAAKA ITEM MAAL
Four women meet by chance in a ‘ladies only’ taxi ride. A martial arts instructor Chitra Joardar (Chitrangada Chakraborty), a cop Shagun Narwal (Sonal Joshi) the owner of the taxi service Shaila Khan (Kritika Pande) and a social media expert Vibha Sharma (Shalini Vatsa). Due to traffic, they decide to halt for some much and a drink. At the joint a lecherous man starts making passes at Chitra. He moves away only to tease her again on the road. The women, who are battling their past heinous experience of rape, decide to set an example. They kidnap the guy, break him first physically, then mentally by torturing him for few days and later bring him to the point of gang rape. The incident gets shot and the video is purposely made viral?. What happens next?
Aditya Kripalani takes a nosedive from the raw honest and passionate TIKLI AND LAXMI BOMB to a school grade irony that relies on shocks, sensationalisms, sadism without a clear cut contrast between the tormentor and the tormented. I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, INSAAF KA TARAZU, ZAKHMI AURAT etc in mainstream and things like AJJI in indie art, rape has been handled with solid conviction that made a profound statement questioning the male patriarchy. TOTTAA PATAAKA ITEM MAAL isn’t a spit entirely on the genre’s grave but its nether a smack or an acceptable wink either. It’s rather an angry glare without words. A reaction coming under a presumed notion that the events happening are a feeling shared by rational thinkers as well. The movie gets dangerously self defeating at times where the handcuffed male surrenders but the said male machismo gets defeated mostly by force. The filmmaker saves the guy from social trauma and curse from family and society. It lacks layers and works on a single agenda.
Performances are the saving grace where Shalini Vatsa, Chitrangada Chakraborty, Sonal Joshi and Kritika Pande bring conviction to their characters that lack the required graph. Only Shalini Vatsa’s story has an emotional connect. The terrific Chitrangada Chakraborty does well but her role is not etched as per her talent and requirement.
Rape is the most heinous crime and any punishment is less. TOTTAA PATAAKA ITEM MAAL is nothing but a pointlessly sadistic welter that lacks a cogent commentary and fails to infuse the trauma that the human civilization is facing since its origin.
