Incredible indeed!!. The first half of 2018 has passed and the year is probably a significant chapter in Bollywood history. The year 2018 in Bollywood has had it all in abundance, controversies, content and success, all having their sway in probably the most successful and noticeable year of Bollywood after a long time.
The year 2018 has seen release of around 60 prime mainstream releases in the last six months and the success rate on average is a whopping one money spinner in the month at least. From the 60 mainstream releases in 2018, Bollywood has already registered 10 astounding success starting from the controversial PADMAAVAT to the latest box office sensation SANJU.
The success ratio of 2018 is probably the best in recent times that reminds of the golden era of the sixties where even television was not a big threat and movie watching was the most favorite outing amongst Indian families. During the golden age, we take 1960 as the best example – the year that saw movies coming with class, color, grandeur, music and undying passion. Be it K.Asif’s eternal masterpiece MUGHAL E AZAM the musical BARSAAT KI RAAT, a Muslim social CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND, the social messenger JIS DESH MEIN GANGA BEHTI HAI, or a romancer like LOVE IN SIMLA, even in those times the number of significant success for the whole year was around 10… 2018 has already registered 10 names to the list.
Later, while the battle with VHS, piracy was on, another demon the cable tv started threatening. Even in those dangerous times, we had a year like 1990 when super star Salman Khan’s debut MAINE PYAR KIYA ( limited release at the end of 1989 and went on to write history in 1990) , Aamir Khan’s DIL clashed with Sunny Deol’s GHAYAL, Big B comeback after Bofor’s scandal – AAJ KA ARHUN, and the birth of Mahesh Bhatt’s AASHIQUI and more ruled the box office.
With growing years, the demons of cable tv piracy took the form of cd’s etc and the online evil got stronger every Friday. The life of a movie after every passing year got shorter and found itself restricted to a weekend.
The year 2018 is historically significant, amongst the evil of piracy, complains of lack of good content and movies with Indian ethos’s and social relevance, the year 2018 had a bang on beginning with Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor starrer PADMAAVAT, yes the controversy played its part but the movie rightly performed on its content by registering a 585 cores worldwide. With pure mass entertainer like BAAGHI 2 starring Tiger Shroff (253 crores) to the unique adage on war that sans jingoism in RAAZI starring Alia Bhatt ( the first women centric film of its kind to cross 100 crore domestic) to John Abraham’s salute to APJ Abdul Kalam in PARMANU : THE STORY OF POKHRAN ( 65croes and still counting), the year has seen a wide range of diversity in its content.
The offbeat coming of age saga 102 NOT OUT starring the awesome twosome Amitabh Bachchan and rishi Kapoor, (78+ crore), the uniquely motivating HICHKI starring Rani Mukherjee (75 crore +), both could have found difficulty in getting the green signal some years ago, with the growing acceptance of content with difference, both 102 NOT OUT and HICHKI found takers.
The most astonishing part is the collections mentioned are not at all a weekend phenomenon. The wise people saying ‘good content finds its audience’ has repeatedly got echoed with a chorus with the success of such films.
The year also saw norms being broken with action icons like Akshay Kumar raising their voice for safe menstruation and hygiene in PAD MAN (120 crore) – the biopic of Arunachalam Muruganantham, B-town Singham – Ajay Devgn shying away from his routine ‘action’ in RAID (142 crores) – a relevant saga based on the real life Income-tax raid during the 80’s reached the marked with tremendous word of mouth.
SONU KE TITU KI SWETY spurned a youthful surprise by raking in 148 crores, it was expected to do well but this bromance with a twist got the youngistaan lapping it up with glee. Finally the one which is currently making all the noise, Raj Kumar Hirani’s SANJU starring Ranbir Kapoor, the dramatized account of the incidents happened in the life of Sanjay Dutt saw the audience accepting it with open arms for its emotional connect. With 120 crores (domestic) already in its kitty in three days, the movie is now expected to register some records in its name.
RACE 3 has also earned (240 crore) but the high cost around 150 crore and low content fails to make it to the glory and it’s not just money we are talking about, the year 2018 for Bollywood is the year our ancestors had visited theatres and still do. It’s the year where the rare amalgamation of good range of content has found acceptance.
6 months, 60 movies, 10 success stories – A success story every month at least.. what a year!! And it’s just the interval – the mighty Independence weekend, Diwali and Christmas is still to come.. picture 2018 ki abhi baki hai mere dost!!
