If there was one underlining motif for the year 2012, it was that the lead players of the industry took a fancy to the uniformed characters in a big way. It might have been fortuitous or by design, but all the big stars, who enacted the role of cops found a greater acceptance with the audience. Here is a rewind to the cop roles played by the lead actors that hit the marquee and emerged as success stories:

Salman Khan: He was the man in fact who brought into relief the role of uniformed cops in a big way with his role in DABANGG and is going to do an encore of the same with DABANGG 2. Playing a rustic cop from the hinterland he set the tone for other actors of his ilk to follow in his footsteps and underlined the premise that the India of small cities is a perfect playground to engage with the fans.

Aamir Khan: Aamir Khan as a serious no non-sense cop, struggling with the demons inside his mind and trying to cope up with the pressures of duty in a metropolitan city like Mumbai gave a superlative performance in Reema Kagti directed TALAASH. The panache with which he played the role of the cop was manifest in the scene where he took the mobile away from his cops so that the actions of police may not be leaked out the media underlined the seriousness with which he executed the role.

Akshay Kumar: Akshay Kumar indeed hit a purple patch in his acting career with two films where he enacted the role of Police officer. His first hit was ROWDY RATHORE, who as a no-nonsense cop scared the wits out of the villains and followed it up with another performance as Bahttar Singh in KHILADI 786 that seemed to have taken off from the role that he did in ROWDY RATHORE. It was his physique and his image as an action-hero that seems to have done the trick for him.

Arjun Rampal: Arjun Rampal in the Naxalite belt was able to impress as the cop in CHAKRAVYUH trying to set the things in perspective and was praised for his efforts, especially in the scenes where he is in confrontation with Abhay Deol.

Sonu Sood: Sonu Sood also tried to change his image of being a bad boy in this cop movie and was able to deliver a competent performance as a cop. The moot point however is, whether MAXIMUM would provide him an opportunity to enact more such cop roles in 2013.
One only hopes that for 2013 somebody would be adventurous and create a role for a lady cop, after all it is being done in a television serial, and with cinema striving to create synergy with television may be it could inspiration for this enactment as well.
