He is no ‘Stranger’ to the world of quirky family fun and is the man Shah Rukh Khan is currently most depended upon. Filmmaker Aanand L Rai who gave us solid entertainers like TANU WEDS MANU series, RAANJHANAA, NIL BATTEY SANNATA and the latest SHUBH MANGAL SAAVDHAN etc with his banner Colour Yellow Productions, has gone dark with NEWTON starring Rajkummar Rao.
AANAND L RAI AND NEWTON
Known to introduce versatile talent and having the penchant for art that balances the commercial requirements as well, Aanand L Rai is now banking on the highly anticipated dark comedy NEWTON helmed by the SULEMANI KEEDA fame Amit V Masurkar. While Rajkummar Rao essays the titular role, acclaimed talents like Pankaj Tripathi, Raghubir Yadav, and Anjali Patil add to the ensemble cast.
Said to be learning experience for Aanand, NEWTON showcases many facets of the Indian election process that the filmmaker wasn’t aware of till he watched the film.
Aanand has explored many genres and many do not know that Aanand who is now looked upon as the one who has better understanding of the art, around ten years ago, Aanand was written off as director by a section of the market in his debut film STRANGERS starring Jimmy Shergill, Kay Kay Menon, Nandana Sen and Sonali Kulkarni. The Bollywood adaptation of the 1951 Hitchcock’s classic STRANGERS ON A TRAIN didn’t generate the expected result.
Aanand’s second film THODI LIFE THODA MAGIC also met with the same disappointing fate in 2008. A wait for three years resulted in the refreshingly quirky TANU WEDS MANU that established Aanand as the new age painter of middle class milieu on the marquee whose brush gives the magical feel of the masters like Hrishikesh Mukherjee & Basu Chatterjee.
It will be quite interesting how the NEWTON’s law of motion on Indian screens on September 22, garners the same reaction it received during the popular Berlin and Tribeca Film Fest.
