The young & talented music composer, Amaal Mallik, who started his Bollywood journey with Salman Khan’s JAI HO has gotten lucky again. And this time, there is an even better & bigger reason for him to feel fortunate as Salman Khan has sung a version of ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ and this has been loved by the audiences.
Not only Salman’s version, but the song which is originally sung by Armaan Mallik, has been loved by the masses & has already become a hit! We were really surprised to know that initially, this song was not even going to be a part of the film.
In a one-to-one conversation, Amaal reveals how he was ready to give it his all for ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ to be a part of the HERO music album, how finally it made way to the HERO album, Salman wanting to give the song his own touch & more.
When asked Amaal how did he come up with ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’, he said, “It was during my JAI HO days while working with Salman sir that ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ was born. One random evening when I was glancing through the papers I read that Salman sir had bought the rights of Subhash Ghai's HERO. I wrote down a few rough lyrics and the hook phrase main hoon hero tera just came to me.”
Telling us about Salman’s reaction to the song, Amaal said, “At this point of time HERO was not even in its initial stages, but I thought I'll bounce it off to Salman sir. He heard it and instantly connected to it and said he loved it because usually with the word ‘hero’ everyone has made a macho and fun song but this would be the first time the word hero would be used in a romantic way. He said once the film starts rolling, he will keep it in mind.”
The song that has been loved by the audience was just an option & wasn’t definite of being a part of the film. “Nikhil sir came on board to helm the project & my songs being in the film were uncertain. And it was just one of the options amongst the songs by other composers,” he said.
Though the song was just an option, Amaal was ready to give his best. He said, “Somewhere down the line I wanted to do this film anyhow, and I was ready to give it my all. I asked Nikhil sir to keep me in mind for any situation in the film as I really wanted to be a part of this project. He told me he wasn't sure how to fit the title song yet so he gave me a situation but that was for another song which was the climax song of the film and the toughest to crack which is my other song ‘O Khuda’.”
He further said, “Nikhil sir trusted me and gave me a shot and I managed to get this one song in Hero. ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ was still left aside. The rest of the songs were ready with the other composers and ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ didn't make it to the album.”
“Salman sir really wanted it in the film but he didn't want to force his way, so Nikhil sir asked me to record it in Armaan's voice. Later when the music was bought by T series, Mr. Bhushan Kumar liked the album but felt the need for another song. Then it was him who asked Salman sir if he could give a song from his bank but Salman sir asked him to listen to MHHT & see if it's the song he was looking for,” he added.
And finally ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ was approved! “He reacted in the most amazing way. He felt this is a very simple heart touching song and the hook was straight from the heart. Salman sir felt the same and they jointly met Nikhil sir and the three of them finally decided to go with it,” said the 24-year-old music composer.
Amaal was surprised when he got to know about the song being incorporated in the final trailer. He said, “I guess Nikhil sir sat down one evening and edited a few portions of the film & sent me a video and asked me to check my mail. I saw the mail and was surprised to hear ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ in Armaan's voice and he said this is HERO's final trailer.”
Revealing that it was Salman’s idea to give this song his own voice, he said, “Salman sir on the other hand, loved the song so much and it kept growing on him. He very sweetly called me randomly one night and said he loves Armaan's version but wants to try one in his voice. I was game, & said let’s give it a shot. Late at night we recorded the song & he gave it his all. The passion and love with which he sang was truly inspiring. We recorded the song in 5 hours flat with the live instruments included.”
Talking about this HERO journey, he said, “The journey of this song has been really beautiful and we all have given it our all. I'm grateful to Salman sir & Nikhil sir for believing me & letting me helm Hero's music….it is an honour to step into the shoes of the legendary Laxmikant Pyarelal & work on this historic film.”
Probe Amaal how is this song going to be different from the others songs that Salman has sung and he says, “There is a huge difference between his other songs. In ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’, it in a higher pitch as compared to the other songs he has sung. The aim was to sound new & unlike himself.”
All’s well that ends well! Hard work & dedication does pay off.
