The prominent new release of the week, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Productions and Fox Star Studios’ Anil, Juhi, Sonam and Rajkummar starrer, EK LADKI KO DEKHA TOH AISA LAGA, disappointed at the box-office, barely managing a shocking 10-12 percent start. Apparently, the rather bold theme of the film could not appeal to the much touted niche evolved(!) audience, despite the presence of the thinking man’s actor, Rajkummar Rao.
Meanwhile, last week’s two major releases, Kangana Ranaut’s MANIKARNIKA-THE QUEEN OF JHANSI and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s THACKERAY, saw a rather satisfactory result. As per early estimates MANIKARNIKA netted 57 crore and THACKERAY 16 crore respectively, during the opening week, both totals to be validated. While MANIKARNIKA still has its task cut out, due to its 100 crore plus budget, the 25 crore budgeted THACKERAY can heave a sigh of relief as the Marathi version is likely to take its consolidated total to a safe 30 crore.
Concluding with the movie marvel of 2019 , URI-THE SURGICAL STRIKE, the Vicky Kaushal starrer, saw a rock steady 36 crore week, thus netting 169 crore in three weeks from India and a super blockbuster status, given the 42 crore total investment (production, promotion, marketing and release). The film has also rocked the US grossing $3m.
