Though there is no doubt that eminent music director O.P.Nayyar pulled out Asha Bhosle, from the B-grade movies and gave her career an impetus with big banner movies like B.R.Chopra’s NAYA DAUR,Nasir Hussain’s TUMSA NAHIN DEKHA, Shakti Samanta’s KASHMIR KI KALI, G.P.Sippy’s MERE SANAM but the music director, who has really exploited the versatility of Asha Bhosle’s voice has been R.D.Burman.

In an interview Asha Bhosle confessed, ”I shall remain obliged to Nayyar Sahab for making me a star but he never experimented with my voice. Nayyar was aware that I sang well at low pitch hence he only created that kind of songs which suited my voice. Hence there was no challenge but Pancham (R.D.Burman fondly addressed in film industry) was the only music director who exploited my hidden talent.”

Readers would be astounded to know to know that even before R.D.Burman became an independent music director he had been experimenting with Asha Bhosle’s voice. You may wonder how?

Asha Bhosle revels, ”I remember in the 60’s Pancham used to assist Burman Da (S.D.Burman). Whenever Burman Da used to assign me a song I would inquire him about the composition but he would just forward me to Pancham saying ‘Pancham se Poocho wo samjhayega’ (Ask Pancham he will explain). I would feel very angry because Pancham was not the music director.”

”However years later I came to know why Burman Da used to ask me to learn the tunes from Pancham because those tunes where actually Pancham’s creation for which he never took credit,” she informed.
