Whatever else BARFI does it surely is bringing a slice of history from the past which was an integral part of the Hindi cinema, romance on a bicycle. In the era of monstrous bikes and super cars, role of cycle as a binding element and facilitating in development of romance had gone out of the window, but BARFI! would surely bring in the old world chance of romance on a bicycle in a big way.
There is an element of reality associated with romance on a bicycle as it has an element of simplicity in its construct, and the love that proliferates and blossoms thrives on simplicity and not on the elements of superficial. further adds an element of genuineness by choosing to ride on the common black bicycle and not the flashy sports bicycles that dominates the market, keeping in sync with the topography of the location where BARFI! has been situated i.e. Bardwan, one of the interior districts in West Bengal.
Romance by its very definition is the force that does away with the elements that connote caste hierarchy and brings it to the most simplistic level, cutting down all the floss. When the floss is cut down there is an element of belief that is injected and when the romance proliferates on a bicycle it makes it more convincing. This is what BARFI! tries to accentuate and the process of accentuation is facilitated in a big way by a humble bicycle.
To drive home the point, one has to just rewind around a decade ago when KAHO NAA…PYAAR HAI was released and the scene where Ameesha Patel walks across from her Mercedes Benz to the bicycle of Hrithik Roshan and making the statement to her father that now the distinction of the class has disintegrated. The same effect may not have been achieved with say a motorcycle.
One of the most beautiful songs of Hindi cinema have been sung on a bicycle, be it Akela Hoon Main Is duniya mein, Aie maine kasam lee, aaj ka ye din kal ban jaega kal, and most of all during the era of fifties, sixties and in seventies when a female character was introduced on to the screen, especially when it attained adulthood, the bicycle was used as the prop for the heroine to give expression to her new freedom. Invariably in such a scenario it so happened that as the song unfolded, the hero would come beneath the bicycle.
One would not know whether BARFI would set the trend for expression of romance through the humble bicycle, but one thing is for sure, it would indeed be able to create an element of nostalgia of romance on a bicycle. Ranbir Kapoor as again set a benchmark of bringing the elements of common man on to the silver screen which he had earlier done through ROCKET SINGH – SALESMAN OF THE YEAR where he had used the humble scooter and now with BARFI! he has made romancing on a bicycle a fact worth conviction.
