It may come as a stunner to readers but it is a fact that legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt, renowned for making timeless classics like PYAASA, KAAGAZ KE PHOOL, CHAUDHVIN KA CHAND, SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM etc. started his career in Bollywood not as a director but as choreographer!
Actually, Guru Dutt aspired to be a film director but had to struggle tooth and nail to survive. From one studio to another he wandered day and night seeking job but in vain. Fortunately he had learnt dancing under the able guidance of renowned Uday Shankar at ‘Uday Shankar India Culture centre’ in Almora and used to even conduct dancing competition to make his ends meet. Eventually it was his dancing skill that helped him get a job at Pune’s Prabhat Studios where he was employed as a dance director in early 40s.
It was during the making of Prabhat’s movie HUM EK HAIN starring Dev Anand that Guru Dutt first came in contact with the evergreen star and the duo struck friendship. The Dutt/ Dev jodi became a perfect example of friendship. In fact the duo promised each other that whoever first becomes a producer will help the other.
Thus, in 1951 when Dev Anand inaugurated his own production banner ‘Navketan’, as a true friend he didn’t forget his promise that he gave to Guru Dutt. Hence, Guru Dutt was invited to direct the movie- BAAZI, an action movie inspired by Hollywood’s cowboy thrillers. Further, when Guru Dutt turned producer he offered Dev Anand C.I.D. Thus their friendship is regarded as the Jai-Veeru Jodi of Bollywood!
