The doyen of Hindi poetry Gopal Das Neeraj breathed his last yesterday evening at the AIIMS trauma centre in New Delhi, at the age of 93. The Padma Bhushan awardee, suffered from a head injury after an accident in his house in Agra as per reports.
Awarded Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007, Gopal Das Neeraj also known as Kavi Neeeraj wrote some immortal gems in Bollywood like, Shokhiyon Main Ghola Jaaye Phoolon Ka Shabab, Ai Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo, Rangeela Re, Phoolon Ke rang Se and many more. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist for the song Kal Ka Pahiya Ram Krishna Hari’for the movie CHANDA AUR BIJLI (1969)
The world of Hindi poetry, literature and Bollywood music was shocked at the news of the said demise. Kavi Neeraj influenced many young writers.
Condolences poured in right from the President of India, The Prime Minister and other eminent personalities.
While PM Narendra Modi wrote, “Shree Gopal Das “Neeraj” ji, revered by eminent poet, songwriter padamashari and padmabhushan, is an irreplaceable loss to the literary world, I pray to God the peace of his soul ,Lord! Give patience to their kin in this sad Bella”.
President Ramnath Kovind noted, “Sad to hear of the passing of veteran poet and lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj. From “Prem Pujari” to “Cha Cha Cha” his compositions and film songs are still remembered, still heard and still stir the soul. Condolences to his family, friends and admirers #PresidentKovind”
According to a report in PTI, Gopal Das Neeraj son Shashank Prabhakar said that his father’s body will be brought to Agra and then to Aligarh for cremation.
