Has Rajesh Roshan lost touch with his music? KRRISH 3 a pointer indeed

From the time when Rakesh Roshan decided to turn a filmmaker, one thing that has been a predominant motif of his films is the music. Rakesh Roshan was fortunate enough that he did not have to seek out the music director as he had a brother in the form of Rajesh Roshan to execute the job for him. And Rajesh Roshan never failed him; rather he was instrumental in enhancing the footfalls by the scores that he set for all the films that Rakesh Roshan directed, till KRRISH 3.


The music of KRRISH 3 however does not belong to the genre that FilmKraft banner is famous for and the music of KRRISH 3 has not been able to make waves. There has been an element of predictability in the nodes that have been used, in particular in the – ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’. Could it be owing to the fact that music of KRRISH 3 was created when the film was announced, but as it took quite a lot of time in making, it has become out of place!

Rajesh Roshan, after all, was, perhaps, known as the poor man’s R D Burman, and though he had an illustrious oeuvre, somehow after his brother Rakesh Roshan stepped into filmmaking as a producer and a director he relegated himself to give music to the films being made by his brother. But music like any craft if it is not practiced and experimented with on a regular basis, starts losing its element of innovation and element of surprise, evident from the music of KRRISH 3.

While he may not have been able to make waves with his latest offering KRRISH 3, for the fans of Rajesh Roshan’s music, it would be insightful to inform that he has created immortality for himself through the miasma of music that he wove through JULIE which got him the Filmfare award from Best Music director one year after he made his debut through Mehmood’s film KUNWARA BAAP. Recognition for his talent came into relief when Dev Anand chose him to compose music for three consecutive films, DES PASAND, MAN PASAND and LOOTMAAR. The templates that Rajesh Roshan had used in all these three films had a distinct echo of sounds that Pancham specialized in, but Rajesh Roshan gave them his own touch and it made him a musician of reckoning.

Rajesh Roshan is also one of those music directors who have given scores of soul touching songs that further added halo to the oeuvre of Kishore Kumar’s songs, with the films like YAARANA, DO AUR DO PAANCH, KALA PATHAR, SWAYAMVAR, BATON BATON MEIN, etc. In fact it was under his baton that perhaps for the first time Kishore Kumar sung the medley – ‘Tune Abhi Dekha Nahee Dekha Hai To Jaana Nahee’– which he later further refined in ‘Pag Ghoongru Baandh’ in NAMAK HALAAL, which as a coincidence was again filmed on Big B. As a matter of fact Rajesh Roshan has given some amazing musical hits for scores of films that Big B acted in, and he was also the first music director under whose baton Big B made his debut as a singer.

Though he continued to get nominated for Filmfare award, it took him another 25 years before he won it again for KAHO NAA…PYAAR HAI in 2000. It was after KAHO NAA…PYAAR HAI that Rajesh Roshan slowly perhaps started withdrawing and reserved his best musical scores for the banner of his brother and films of his nephew, Hrithik Roshan.

But Rajesh Roshan’s music continued to enthrall the audience as he continued the legacy of soft and soul touching music that his father Roshan epitomized and took it to new labels with each of the films that he gave music too until KRRISH 3 happened. He may have given best of the music for his brother Rakesh Roshan and nephew Hrithik Roshan’s ventures, but it seems his latest compositions for KRRISH 3 appear hackneyed!
