Sonam Kapoor, who began her career with high expectations in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s SAAWARIYA, had to undergo many failures. Finally she hit the jackpot with RAANJHANAA; a movie that re-discovered Sonam Kapoor’s potential as an actress par excellence.

Director Anand L Rai after the amazing success of TANU WEDS MANU was being compelled to direct its sequel but he wanted to drift and direct another subject that was more close to his heart. Hence he decided to postpone the sequel and started work on his dream project RAANJHANAA. As the story was set in small town and depicted a love story of a middle class family he opted for south actor Dhanush and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor.

Speaking about the movie Sonam Kapoor in an interview said, ”Director Anand L Rai was poisoned about me that I was a fashionable girl and I would not suit the character of the middle class girl Zoya in the movie. But Anand was confident about me.”

She added, ”Anand had seen me in Rakeysh Mehra’s movie DELHI-6 and was quite impressed. To learn the nuance of the character Anand had organized an acting workshop under prominent theatre director Arvind Gaur. Later Anand and I also visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.”

Sonam Kapoor candidly confessed that she had watched Jaya Bachchan’s movie GUDDI many times to learn the details of a young school going girl.

Eventually all her hard work paid off as the movie not only became super hit but it fetched Sonam Kapoor a Filmfare nomination as Best actress Award.
