Mere paas aao mere doston, ek kissa suno…

This popular song in Amitabh Bachchan’s super hit movie MR. NATWARLAL (1979) was Amitabh Bachchan’s debut song. Any guesses which music director had the privilege to record Bachchan’s debut song? Well, it was neither Laxmikant Payrelal nor R.D.Burman or Kalyanji Anandji but the dark horse was Rajesh Roshan, the young and talented music director, who was making waves in the 70’s with musical hit movies like KUNWARA BAAP, JULIE, DOOSARA AADMI, BATON BATON MEIN, KHATTA MEETHA, INKAAR etc.

As Rajesh Roshan turns 59 today, Glamsham.Com wishes him birthday greetings and reveals how he cajoled Amitabh Bachchan to render his first song ‘Mere paas aao mere doston, ek kissa suno…’

Readers would be surprised to know that this was Rajesh Roshan’s very first film with Amitabh Bachchan but still the young music director was able to impress Bachchan, who then was reigning as superstar.

Earlier Laxmikant Payrelal, R.D.Burman and Kalyanji Anandji had been insisting Amitabh Bachchan to sing but he would decline reasoning his acting would be affected. However, after Manmohan Desai convinced him to sing a few lines in the hit song ‘My name is Gonsalves’ ( AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY) film, producer Tito resolved to make him sing in his movie MR. NATWARLAL.

Rajesh Roshan in an interview revealed, ”MR. NATWARLAL was a fun filled film targeted at the children (who were and still are the greatest fan of Amitabh Bachchan). Hence Tito decided to bank on Bachchan’s singing abilities by incorporating a song in the fashion of a fable. Accordingly, Anand Bakshi sahib wrote a song and I composed the music.” He adds, ”Initially Bachchan Sahib created a fuss but when he heard the tune he was convinced that the song will be a hit among the children and as expected the song hit the bulls eye and is still a rage among children.”
