As we had hinted at the obvious in our box-office report, both the new releases, MUMBAI 125 KMS. and SONALI CABLE, failed to enthuse the audience as they preferred to wait for Farah Khan’s upcoming blockbuster, HAPPY NEW YEAR, releasing this Diwali.
|HAIDER AND BANG BANG|
Comparatively speaking, it was the Hemant Madhukar directed MUMBAI 125 KMS. which dominated Ramesh Sippy’s SONALI CABLE. The horror genre in the 3D version swayed the battle in MUMBAI 125 KMS.’s favour.
Meanwhile, the Hrithik-Katrina starrer, BANG BANG, crashed in the second week with around 25 crore thus netting 145 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India. Crossing Ajay Devgn’s SINGHAM RETURNS, Hrithik Roshan’s BANG BANG has emerged as the second highest grosser after Salman’s KICK. The dubbed versions added another 5-6 crore. The huge budgeted BANG BANG should turn out to be a safe bet provided it gets a good satellite price. Additionally, the makers have to thank the superb overseas run for saving the day.
The other release of the same week, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shahid Kapoor starrer, HAIDER, also saw a big fall but was fairly steady at good multiplexes. Adding another 15 crore, HAIDER has netted 55 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India. With Vishal and Shahid forfeiting their remuneration (resulting in a reasonable budget) and the quite good overseas (especially US) run, HAIDER should safely move into the profit zone.
