When Sajid Khan appeared on ‘Comedy Nights with Kapil’ his opening remark-perhaps to shield himself from the onslaught of super flop saga called HIMMATWALA- had quipped wished he had made it as a film of 10 minutes! Well, while one could endure the pain of HIMMATWALA for 10 minutes, HUMSHAKALS as next offering by Sajid Khan is an offering that one cannot even survive for 10 minutes and Sajid Khan was portraying it as being comedy of the year.
William Shakespeare also must be uncomfortable in his grave that his original idea of twins that he had postulated in The Comedy of Errors which had inspired filmmakers to present their own versions of the same, starting from RAM AUR SHYAM in Hindi cinema and blossoming through ANGOOR, SEETA AUR GEETA etc., would be reduced to such grotesquely absurd proportions as Sajid Khan has reduced it to, in HUMSHAKALS.
It seems that the contours that define the nomenclature – comedy- need to be visited by Sajid Khan and his ilk- before they wield the megaphone once again to try a new genre of comedy. HUMSHAKALS has crossed all levels of comprehension and sensibilities manifest from – replication of facial molecular structure that can completely transform an individual’s appearance, to a serum that causes chromosomal alteration inducing dog-like behavior in humans, and a third stage OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) patient who goes crazy when anyone sneezes, cocaine and vodka parathas and other such idiotic situations that HUMSHAKALS has been studded with.
If Sajid Khan believes that he can get away with blue murder with a product like HUMSHAKALS, then he is totally mistaken as even the children watching the movie had a long yawning look on their faces. A film that pays tribute to Jim Carrey, Kishore Kumar and Peter Sellers indeed has the guts to claim so, as if Jim Carrey was to watch the movie he would pack his bags and jump in the Hudson Bay and even Kishore Kumar would be splitting his hair from the heaven.
Saif Ali Khan on the eve of release of HUMSHAKALS had said that he may not have done a film like this 10 years ago, as a matter of fact should not have done a film like HUMSHAKALS at all. He has built up an image for himself and it may go for a toss and same could be said about Riteish Deshmukh as well who is doing some serious and thought provoking films in Marathi and has been single handedly been responsible for giving Marathi cinema a new lease of life.
It is high time that a director like Sajid Khan needs to be packed lock stock and barrel by the audience from the film making arena and all future film makers also be warned not to take the audience for granted. If this is done, then this would be the real success arising out of release of HUMSHAKALS.
