With Vijender Singh in FUGLY, one of the core expectations is to see the real life boxer in action. However, filmmaker Kabir Sadanand was sure that even though he could well have played around with this image, he wanted to stay true to the character that he was playing on screen.

‘That’s because in the film, he is not playing a professional boxer. He is playing this youngster who wants to make it as a boxer, is also a boxer by heart but then has inherited his politician father’s seat. With such a space and setting that he was finding himself in, Vijender couldn’t have started boxing without any rhyme or reason,’ says Kabir, who has brought together an ensemble of youngsters in the film.
There are few action scenes in the film but neither are they over the top nor do they stray away from the core narrative.

‘In reality, all these boxers are very law abiding. They will be the last ones to pick up fight in public as they know they are strong and could end up being tops over the ones they take on. Hence, they are rather happy with themselves and stay away from brawls. So we have played with that sentiment. Of course, it is also quite interesting when such men are pushed to a corner,’ winks Kabir.
A Delhi boy himself, Kabir adds that a lot of incidents as seen in FUGLY transpire from his life. ‘That’s what makes FUGLY inherently a very funny and entertaining tale,’ he promises.
We look forward to that once this Grazing Goat Productions’ outing with Mohit Marwah, Kiara Advani and Arfi Lamba in other principle roles releases all over this Friday.
